As been stated, 2004-2006 seem to be the problem years with '04 being the higher incidence of Cam Phaser issues.

Sadly, my '09 (pushing 114K) has seemingly developed this problem... the ticking has been slowly growing louder over the last year or so.

So, the cam phaser begins ticking, why does it tick, and what is the ultimate out come to be expected?

I never got real deep into the workings of the phasers but I do know that they work off of oil pressure so use good oil and filter. My 09 F-250 with the 5.4 made noise shortly after I bought it. After the engine warmed up the phasers sounded like a can of marbles at idle. The service dept. said not to worry. But, I worry about stuff that sounds like that. I traded it and have the 150 now. I have an 09 150 bought it from the ford dealership i work at and it recently started rattling. No matter which 5.4 3v you have the potential for cam phaser noise is always there. Now the 04 to 08's seem to have more issues with oil pressure problems due to timing chain tensioners.
