power steering whine?

saw a couple PS related threads in the super duty forum today so thought i'd ask this question i've had since i bought the truck in april. i have a constant whine, variable with engine speed, that sounds like what a typical power steering whine would sound like. the level looks fine and the power steering works fine (when warm.. little stiff when cold). is this a normal 6.0 thing or am i looking at PS issues somewhere? i never had it on my 5.4 SD.

Drain and replace the fluid - how long/mileage you had the truck? Have you ever done it before? If you've never done it, it makes a world of difference.

I'm over 200k now, so some of my early morning PS weakness that resolves with warmup, is probably related to the old fluid. What do you open to drain the fluid?

You can pull the return line off the brake booster. They are tied together put it in a bucket pump the brakes and rotate the wheel untill it's down a quart just don't pump any air. Fill with transmission fluid keep doing it until all the fluid looks clean. About 3-4 qts if memory serves.
I still had a PS whine in mine afterwards so I used 1qt Lucas transmission fluid. It's thicker and it worked nicely! That was 20k miles ago. I have 212k on it now.

I was also thinking old fluid. Then there is air if the level is low and you pulled some
air in. The last item is old tired pump. Not as likely as the others.

One thing to not forget is the brake hydraulic accumulator (booster) holds some oil under
pressure so if the engine quits you can still stop. So you need to give the
brakes a few pumps to remove that old fluid in there also.

I was told that that reservoir has it own screen that can get nasty. The down side
of pulling it is getting air into the system. The best way to remove air is a vacuum
system. Fill Burp Fill Burp. The burp is by placing the reservoir under a vacuum to
expand the air and get it out.

Use Mercon V fluid and install a Magnefine 3/8" filter in the return line.

Do you happen to know the part number to use with our trucks?

I found one on EBay. There doesn't appear to be a part number, just a size and he said 3/8". That's my plan, at least.

Should we not use LV or whatever the newer one is?
