High Idle Question...

7.3 Brothers:
I started the rig this morning, after idling for say 20 minutes, the engine automatically went from it's idling purr of (700 RPM's) to a higher idle
(1000 RPM's) automatically. So I tapped the accelerator gently to bring it back down off of the higher idling. So far so good, then; After 10 minutes, engine automatically started creeping back up to 1000 RPM's. Is this a normal operating function of the motor in colder temps. or is there something else going on that I should have looked at? It has been under 20 degrees for the past 5 days. No check engine light on or anything. Thx

Oh my goodness, NO. That is completely wrong.

It shouldn't do that at all.

yes, that is completely normal. it does this to help warm the engine up to operating temp.

Actually, more reasons. Warm up when cold, and long low idles either raise emissions, wash down the cylinders, or both - I remember reading something on those and the "both" answer seems to fit how a diesel works.

I think your right. That and a wear pattern on the bearings. I heard there is an "ambulance" tune or something to prevent it. I know a buddy had gotten something like that on his 00 for his work truck. It idles for hours/ days at the jobsites.
