I'm working on getting a couple highboys at the moment. Im working on spending that tax return pretty quick this year. Hahaha. I like that crew cab but at that price I can't see any money on the back side when I'm ready to sell it
With the obvious rust that's picture the price is too high at $7,500.00.... If you go look at it and seriously want to make an offer on it I'd pay close attention to these areas:
- Roof line/drip rail for bubbles and rust.
- Obviously the rocker needs to be replaced, check the other side.
- Check the front floor boards under the carpet near the cab mounts,
- Check the lower rear cab corners,
- Look for the plastic inner fender wells in the bed, if it doesn't have them chances are there is mud and crap stuck in the front edge of the bed. Check that area for rust along with the wheel well arches.
Aside from the obvious rocker panel hole in the pass side the truck looks pretty clean on the outside.
As a comparison for you I paid $5,600 for my '76 Crew Cab, it had lots of rust in the bed above the wheels, in the front corners, in the lower cab corners, in the front floors as well as the rockers. I was willing to pay that price because it was the exact truck, trim package, and color I wanted. I would say the biggest concern in a crew cab for rust is the drip rail area, that's something I would avoid as it requires alot of work to repair it to look right.
If the only real rust issue is the rocker I'd be inclined to offer somewhere near $6k-$6,500. But that's just me...
Most highboys came with the big hub 44HD axle (3500lb) but a few did come with the lighter duty 44 axle (3000lb).
I don't see many of them, maybe 1 out of every 10 highboys i come across, most 67-77 highboys were optioned with the 44HD.
The 44HD was an optional upgrade until '74, otherwise highboys came from the factory with the lighter duty D44, from 74-77 the 44HD came standard on highboys.
So '73 was the only year a dentside highboy would have came factory with a light duty D44 (if a 44HD was not ordered).
My cousin and I each have a 76 Highboy, both have the lighter Dana 44 low pinion. He also has a 77 Highboy parts truck with the low pinion 44HD. Seems weird that we each have one with the lighter axle. Low pinion with discs and power assist, so it really couldnt have come from too many other places.

Hmmm, interesting....the MPC shows the light duty 44 as '73 only, i've only seen the light duty 44 on earlier highboys, '73's maybe early '74's...
It's possible the MPC is wrong, it wouldn't be the first time.
