I haven't posted on here in a while and to be honest, I didn't do much research to see if anyone had this exact issue already, but hear me out. I had an epiphany on the way to the firehouse tonight. So here's the back story. I know my truck needs a map sensor so that is currently unplugged. The issue I have is a lets say "intermittent miss" (more like intermittently running correctly) and also during acceleration it's like I hit a dead spot around 2 grand and just plume white smoke. My theory is a failing cps. CPS sends signal of cam position to the icm (right?) so if that were screwing up it could cause the issue around 2 grand. False signal to the icm, improper injection timing, fuel enters cylinder on downstroke of the power stroke and is pushed right out the tailpipe in a nice, white, unburnt cloud. I don't know how that sounds to you guys, but it makes sense in my head. I will add that the truck seems to run better cold than it does hot.
I have a hard time believing that that is the main or only issue. I spent a good amount of time on it today and i think i have it narrowed down a bit. I whipped up a breakout box out of some spare parts I had and shut the injectors down one at a time both at idle and about 1 grand.(the miss is most noticeable at 1 grand) Every single injector made a noticeable skip when shut down, but none were quite the same or quite as bad as the skip i have most of the time. I should mention, every once in a blue moon I don't have the miss at all. I also found one of the boots coming off the turbo had slipped out of the clamp and was leaking a ton of boost. With that fixed the truck obviously runs much better, but that skip is still there, and i have the issue with the white smoke. If I'm just cruising and i mash it i get a nice pop and then the white smoke. I've even looked around all over forums and I've found a few others with the same sounding issue, but no one has resolved it. I have a CPS on the way from RiffRaff, so hopefully that will make some difference.
There is a deal if you free rev and it bobbles around 2k for some reason that is an indication of inj orings I think.that or ipr.I can't remember.mike knows what he is talking about.I don't doubt him.
I had almost exactly the same issue for about a year. Replaced the CPS several times with auto part stores brands, never corrected the issue. Took it to Ford, after 2 days, they replaced the CPS with theirs, even knowing that I had already repalced it. No more miss. I think the CPS is definitely worth replacing, if nothing else, it will rule it out.
Get the truck up to full temp. In park/N mash it all the way to the floor. If the rpm's jump to 1800-2000 and stumbles then shoots to 3000 the you have oring issues.
Okay. New ford(c code blue one) CPS is in. Made a world of difference. I do notice it has the issue fordpride mentioned. I also still see a miss around idle to 1200rpm. But the clouds of white smoke and blatant loss of power has diminished greatly. The breakout box test led me to believe all of my injectors are functioning. And I could see o rings causing the small stumble I have now. But what about the miss? I noticed a wire cut in the valley near the IPR. Didn't look like it went to the IPR but it was in the same harness. Any thoughts on that? What else could cause a miss like that? If you guys want ill take a video of it later and put it up
Just an update, I put Hot Shot's Secret and a Donaldson Filter in with this oil change. Ive got about 400 miles on it so far, and while I havent noticed much of a difference, The truck seems to run much more consistently.
