Help Appease Wife....
I am a long time lurker and as of the last 4 weeks a hard reviewer. I was on the cusp purchasing a 2012-13 F150 until the wife clamped me down!! A bit of history on cars and me, I am 44 years old and I have had only 3 cars since I was 17 (YES 3). I know odd but I take very good care of my cars.
I have had two Ford F150's (85'/94') and a Chevy Tahoe (03 and still driving it). Bottom line I miss having a F150.
My wife wants me to get a Toyota Tundra. Her issue is we bought her a new 2008 Audi A6 2.7T and for 3 years that car was a pain in the azz with the twin turbos. Nothing but major issues, we ended up getting out of the car with Audi and she bought an 11' Outback (Nice car actually).
I like the 3.6 motor because I only haul the dirt bike and drive more highway. BUT I told her I will get a 5.0 so we don't have to worry about the turbos.
NOW she is hung up on the fact that Toyota offers 100K B-B warranty standard (Which I know is in the price..!).
I am hoping forum members can provide me with some info on why the 3.6 turbo motor will last that long or should I get the 5.0 because of how long I keep the rigs, plus how I can explain that the FORD is a better built vehicle.
Also if anyone can tell me the best place-pricing to get a FORD I would appreciate it. Local Denver dealers are kind of d*cks actually. Distance does not matter to me. If I wanted another Chevy/GMC or a RAM 1500 I would go back to Dave Smith Motors but I want a F150 again.
Thanks in advance,
Brett
2. Tundra is a great truck; however, if you check with owners, most will complain badly about MPG; in the Raptor range. Search online for Tundra issues.
3. Have you driven the 5.0? Me and my wife have just gone through a week of test driving. Started with the Eco. I really like it. Test drove the 5.0 and it suits us better. My wife is really into "making the truck loud". When I informed her of the difference between the Eco and the 5.0, that was it!! This may not apply to your situation. I drove the 5.0 and it's a great. I happen also to own a Boss 302 with similar engine, so I'm partial. Have you test driven the F150 with your wife??
4. Do some more research on long term fuel costs between F150 and Tundra; don't go by advertising; find some Tundra owners, just ask them in person about your interest in the Truck; I considered one for a while; If I asked 5 guys, I got the same answer; "Truck is great, mileage is awful!"
5. Ford has great deals right now depending on Trim level, etc. There's got to be some good dealers in your area and probably you'll hear from someone on this forum with good advice on that. If you financed with Ford, you could get up to $3500 in rebate $$$.
Good luck.
Ford doesn't offer a 3.6L engine. The 3.5L is a twin turbo. It's known as the Ecoboost.
The other V-6 is a 3.7L and it's a hoss. The two V-8 offerings are the 5.0L and the 6.2L engines, both outstanding candidates.
Toyota's warranty program mirrors Ford's.
My best advice is to polish your negotiating skills, find a truck that interests you and go to work.
Ford is trying to clear the lots for the 2013's right now. Great deals can be had on the 12's.
Ask the sales manager to pull up every incentive t hat applies to a particular VIN number, some incentives may actually cancel out others.
Incentives such as Law Enforcement Officer, military, special purchasing plans through your employer, etc.
You might check out this thread. This fella has both, a Tundra and an F-150. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-new-post.html
I am sure the Tundra is a great truck. I have been partial to Toyota for a very long time. I still have my 1992 Toyota Camry and I also have a 2001 Toyota Sequoia. Both are great vehicles...the Camry lasted 230,000 miles before the thermostat stuck and it blew a head gasket. I purchased a used low mileage motor and replaced it which is still running strong.
The Sequoia has also been a great SUV. It does not leak a drop of oil, runs strong, has a few issues here and there with the ABS etc. but nothing that cannot be resolved.
I have no doubt the Toyota is a great truck. I did look at them as my possible future truck also due to their incredible history of being a reliable vehicle. (Yes all manufacturers have their issues) the thing that is keeping me from buying one is that the Tundra cannot tow as much as the F150, the Toyota mileage of course is not as good, and really their line is dated and needs all the bells and whistles the other trucks have. Don't get me wrong sitting in the Toyota is nice the seats feel great and the 5.7 sounds great too.
Here is why I am choosing the F150...the torque of the ecoboost is awesome, it can also tow up to 11,200 lbs., just sitting in the F150 you really feel how luxurious it is (I am going to get the Platinum), the interior is comfortable and the truck rides awesome! It just soaks up the rough roads and also that ecoboost is QUICK!! I am not looking for a race car but let's face it...it is good to have that power when needed.
Worrying about the twin turbo motor honestly is a non issue. There have not been any issues that I have heard of about the turbos other than the inter cooler. The 5.0 is also a great motor...sounds great...and has good power. You really can't go wrong with either of them and it all depends on your needs as to which is a better fit. Good luck!
Sorry for the long post everyone.
Not sure how the Ford warranty will be on my Ecoboost because I haven't needed anything. Same deal with the 2010 Super Duty I traded in for the F150...no problems.
