I paid $997 to have my 351W bored, the heads rebuilt, and for the machinist to supply the new pistons, rings, bearings, etc. All I supplied was the cam and the time to build it. Granted I got a good deal, but it wasn't a huge favor and not terribly far from what you should be able to find. So, do like Jim suggested and buy a scrap engine and have the machine work done on it.

I got my 460 longblock delivered from Promar for $1400.
It was a no brainer.

$750, obviously includes what would be a core charge, but you still have to find all your tin, heads, timing case, rotating assy, cam & valvetrain, gaskets, dipstick, adapters, brackets, etc...

If you buy a scrap engine it will likely have all the front dress too.
You can use the alternator, waterpump, whatever, if it looks good... and if it doesn't you have the cores to return.

Just my 2c

A 302 isn't the world's best choice for a lifted truck, but they sure look cute in the engine bay.

A 351W-based whatever will probably be your best bet for a bolt in affair.

If you want HP and TQ, 460 and you shift the gears yourself. The C6 isn't a bad transmission, but it robs HP and Fuel Economy thanks to it's overweight tendencies. If you can find a way to shed weight internally on the C6, you might just end up with an incredibly stout automatic.

I think I'd go the other way if I couldn't shift my own gears - AOD. I've read where they can be beefed to handle gobs of power and the lockup and OD are a huge plus. One downside to the AOD is the very high OD ratio of .67:1, but I think I've read where there are other gear sets out there that can make that ratio a bit less. That'd be my approach were I shiftless.

silly i know but i am interested which engine most of you prefer and why? whether it be the 351w or 460 or an aftermarket like the 347,393 or the 427.

i know very little about these ford engines except that my chevy friends say all theirs are better. whatever i say to them
I would do a 351 Clevor with that C6 & do exhaust stacks (that is what I'm planning to do with my next truck). Can you say awesome...
