If you had $2,0000 just magically fall from the sky, and you had a C6 tranny in your truck, which engine would you put in your 150? Aftermarket or one that was offered from the factory.
silly i know but i am interested which engine most of you prefer and why? whether it be the 351w or 460 or an aftermarket like the 347,393 or the 427.
i know very little about these ford engines except that my chevy friends say all theirs are better. whatever i say to them
If you want to reuse the C6 it has to go with the engine family you have now 351 (small block) or 460 (big block). The C6 case is different.
But that aside, "there's no replacement for displacement". I alreqady swapped my 351W with C6 for a 460 with C6 setup. I had to have the C6 guts swaps to a big block C6 case. Gas mileage? Who cares?
And if $2,000 ever falls from my sky, I'd put a stroker kit in the 460 and make it 521 or 557 cid.
I'd put a 300-I6 behind a T-18 or NP435, and give the C6 away.
But that is my personal preference, and that combo goes great with my driving style and needs.
The question I have is: what do you want the truck for and how would you like to drive it? Do you want the truck for low end torque for towing and work, or for street rodding etc...

Bingo. That's the question I would ask. If cruising I'd go one way, like 351W and a 252H cam. If towing I'd stroke it or go 460. Anyway, what's the intended use?
I'm a huge fan of the 300 inline-6. In fact, I could preach hours about this motor and how great it is, but that doesn't make it everybody's favorite and not everybody is going to like it. That being said... If I had 2 grand drop magically from the sky, I'd mod a 300-6.
A 500 or 600 CFM carburetor on an Offenhauser C-series intake with the stock cam and head and a set of Hedman headers puts you at 200 horsepower and over 300 pounds of torque. This is identical performance to a 351 Windsor High Output that came in the late 80's model trucks. And it does this with better gas mileage, at the same or a hair lower RPM.
Next would be a Competition cam and spring kit with the 260 or 268 cam. Port the head, and if you've got enough money left over, bore it for oversize valves. 250 - 270 horsepower and around 325 or more pounds of torque is where you'll be at.
The next option would be a stroked 351 Windsor. Stroking a 302 to a 347 is pointless when you can start with a 351 and stroke to a 400'' + motor and retain most all your other components that came with the 302. And, when on a budget, you want the best bang for the buck.

I'd keep my 351W but pull it and put a different set of pistons in it, performer rpm heads, comp cams XE256H camshaft, that's about it. I'd drive it like a daily driver.

my 81 f150 is a 4x4. according to the VIN it originally had a 351W in him but the PO gave me the truck with an empty engine bay. He did give me a newly rebored 302 engine with new pistons, heads, rods etc. Just had to put it together myself. But through my time on this forum, I have been convinced that perhaps the 302 will not have enough power for what I want. (riding thru sand dunes, mud and as a DD).
So I wanted to know which engine could I just swap simply to get more low end torque, more pulling power etc
A good 351W w/a torque cam, such as Comp's 252H, will give you very good low end torque. The Explorer I had ran a 351W that I built with that cam and everything else stock (save for the ported heads and dual exhaust, which wouldn't have helped the off-idle torque). With 3.50 gears and a C6 it would light the right rear from a stop if you wanted.
I have a Promar reman engine in my truck.
So I would trust them... but $750 for a bare, prepped block is off the hook.
And then how much for the rest???
Either buy a longblock, or get a scrap engine locally for weight and have it built as you like it.
