I have not had any air blowing out of any other area that the defrost. When I select floor, HI, all blows from windshield defrost, similarly no matter what setting I select, only blows out defrost.
How can I troubleshoot this? Where to start? Control unit in dash? stuck vent flap? I have heard that the controls were a common problem... but I guess the question is how do I determine if that is the actual issue?
On my 04 F250 blowing only out the defrost usually means a vacuum leak. In my case it was in the ESOF 4x4 system. Check to make sure you have vacuum and there is no leaks.

That may make sense, does that have control of the automatic 4x4 at the hub? Right now the only way I get 4x4 on the fly is if my hubs are locked. I figured I had a faulty hub and haven't taken the time to check it out.
You most defiantly have a vacuum issue. it's quite easy to trouble shoot. The first question is do you hear the vacuum pump run when the key in the on position?
Yep....sounds like a bad vacuum hose to the hubs OR a bad seal in the hub.....does the vacuum motor run when you turn on the key after it has sat for a while?
On the passenger fender there should be a PVH solenoid (Pulse Vacuum Hub Solenoid). You might want to disconnect this from the vacuum system and plug the line. The idea is to try and eliminate the ESOF vacuum system from the rest of the vacuum that runs the heater system. If the air blows out from other areas, you know where your problem is. Because 4x4 only works with hubs locked, sounds like your vacuum leak is in the ESOF vacuum system and not with the heater system. If you are not interested in fixing the ESOF system at this time, leave it isolated from the vacuum system (plug open lines to prevent dirt entry) and continue to run your automatic 4x4 with the hubs locked.

Well I have heat control now. thanks a lot guys turns out it wasn't a vacuum leak.
I just looked at the pump and the connection, I squeezed a little bit tighter and sure enough the pump fired right up and now I have controls.
Should this pump be running all the time?
If not maybe I do still have a vacuum leak somewhere but for now at least My wife can have warm feet!
My diesel vacuum pump does not run all the time. It shuts off once the vacuum canister is full of vacuum. If yours is running all the time there is definitely a vacuum leak. I would be afraid of burning out the pump if it runs all the time.
ESOF in Auto hub position works now too, but as suspected I will need to find a leak somewhere or faulty pressure switch because it doesn't shut off. Either cannister never gets to pressure or sensor does not shut off pump.
Going to review schematic that Yahiko has.
common place for leak is where the vac lines hook up to the hubs. If you look at back of front tires you will see where the line attaches to the hubs. Unhook one line at at time and plug line with something(a golf tee works really well) and see if you pump shuts off. If so you foun your leak
As it truns out, my pump was faulty and when running, sometimes created a vacuume, and others times not. Turns out the one from my 08 parts truck fit fine. Thanks for the help all.
