I think you are thinking of the (2x) NP435 shifter pins, Bill...........all the T18/19 transmissions I have seen only have one pin, installed from the drivers side.
Skip1970, the pin can slide inward when the shifter is removed, & drop into the trans. You should be able to retrieve it through the PTO cover - you might need a magnet.

NP435 .. Different part number: D2TZ-7221-A .. Pin-Transmission Gearshift Lever to Housing.
Pic: Scroll down to 7B125 .. D2TZ-7B125-A = T-18 .. Parts catalog says 2.
ya mine only had 1, i found it in the drain plug gully! hehehe thank god. im gonna put it back in the trans with a small dab of jbweld so it dont slip out again.
1) I replaced the pins, I think there was 2, they were still in place but worn down. Shifter is much tighter now.
2) I found the original shift **** in the bed of the truck. The pattern is still visible. The PO had replaced it with an 8-ball, a real one, that he drilled out.
3) When I replaced the pins, I pulled the shift lever and bent it down and towards the driver with a torch so I don't hit my knuckles on the dash going to reverse anymore. Much better.
