I thought i was making progress with old reliable, then I noticed a coolant leak, well it had been parked in grass most of the time but this time i had it in the driveway, the day i went to work on the truck i noticed a pool of coolant, I was hoping it was just a hose or the radiator but it wasnt. I think its coming from the weep hole in the water pump. . should I buy a refurb. pump or stop being a cheap ******* and pay the extra? I know she is ugly currently but i dont have the money to do body now. every penny counts but i am just looking for input from the long time owners...
any help is appreciated.
You don't say which engine you have. When I replaced the water pump in my '88 F-150 with the 300 6 cylinder engine, Pronto auto parts had a NEW water pump. I don't know if you have a Pronto near you, but some auto parts place may have a NEW water pump for a reasonable price.
That being said, I have never had a problem with a rebuilt water pump. But the quality of everything seems to be going down these days.
I've had success with both. May also think about replacing timing chain if you're gonna replace water pump. I hear that quite a bit from folks here, since the labor involved isn't much more considering how far you are gonna be into already. If you suspect/replacing water pump, it would be a good time to hose everything down in that area to to get a good idea and have it cleaned up well to do the repair.
For parts like a water pump, starter, bearings, and the like, I'd much rather go to NAPA than the discount places like AutoZone and Advanced. I went through 3 starters on my 460, the 4th one held up. Each one was from AutoZone (lifetime warranty) and each one sounded friggin' different while starting. That tells me they have NO manufacturing tolerances when they "rebuild" them... just throw it together, test it, ship it.
Never had a bad part from NAPA. Ever. Not saying they don't have any (everybody does) but they do seem to have a lower failure rate than the junk from Discount Advanced Super Save A Lot Store.
Whenever I put a part in my truck I prefer to put new parts in. They may cost a little more but since they have a lifetime warranty more times then not, I figure its worth the cost. Especially if you plan on keeping the truck for awhile. The way I look at it there's a reason why rebuilt parts come with a year or two warranty.
