Guys, I suspect that this has been asked and answered before, but being new to this forum, I'm going to risk it anyway.
I just took delivery of an '07 F-250 with the 5.4, automatic. The engine has only 50,000 on it, so wear isn't an issue.
I'm considering one of the tuners, mainly for mileage improvements. I tow and haul infrequently. The truck is equipped with the complete factory tow package. Now, these are pretty much blind items to me as I never purchased one before and the reviews for pretty much everything I see online are mixed. I like the changability of the ones like the Superchips 1865. One constant I see in reviews is the Bully Dog customer service pretty much sucks and that's important to me. I would consider a mounted unit like the ones I see that connect inline to the MAP sensor terminals, but have no idea if they are any good or not.
Before anyone says, I know that driving style is paramount to mileage and tires also. I drive conservatively and the tires are new Generals, on road tread style standard on delivered '12 models.
I'll appreciate any input anyone has on this topic.
i belive if you use the search here you will find that 5 star coustom tunes is the best way to go mike is the guy to talk to and they are sponsers here so look in the vendors list try that...cant speak from exp...cause i went to hypertech before i found this site... not reallythe best but it works for me
I've never heard of anyone who realized any significant gain by tuning a gasoline engine; if mileage is your goal you would be best served putting the money you set aside for your tuner into your gas budget. Lots around here like Mike at 5-star tuning, but don't expect better fuel economy from the tune.
The only problem is my mileage figures are just that. I barely got that truck near 2500rpms and my tires were like rocks (highest psi).
I get a little better mileage out of mine than most, but mine is a reg cab, xl, manual tranny, no extras, etc. I just took a 1,000 mile trip running 70-75 mph the whole way and averaged 15.5 mpgs. My best has been 16.5 and my worst 13.5, but 13.5 seems to be about the average fir most.
