79 Hood Adjustment

Anyone know of a video or something that explains how to adjust the hood on one of these pickups? I have tweaked and adjusted and I cannot get it to come out right. There must be a process to go about it. Or some basic guidelines.

I copied this a good while ago to keep as reference. Helped me re align my body work after removal:

Hood: Often the hood sits up above the cowl. To fix this, adjust the hinge where it mounts to the inner fender. Up at the front, and down at the rear. Reverse procedure to raise the rear of the hood. The hinges should be lubed with a good lubricant to operate properly or your alignment wont work no matter how long you play with it. (you should be able to almost throw the hood open with the flick of a finger)

Hood

Set everything in the middle, hood hinge to inner fender bolts and the hood bracket bolts.

I like to remove the latch at first so I can easily swing the hood open and closed.

If the rear of the hood is sticking up when it is closed you actually adjust the hood to open MORE. Either by lifting the front of the bracket or lowering the rear of the bracket. Sometimes both in combination. The center bolt acts as a pivot.

Once that is done, and it can take a while to get everything nice and the gaps decent you then set the latch height.

If the hood is maxed out forward and is still interfering with the cowl you'll then need to loosen the inner fender to firewall horn bolts, inner fender bolt and radiator core support and move everything forward.

I know that when I removed my hood on my 74, I failed to mark the hinge locations and I know better. It took my son and I about 60 tries to get that hood lined up. I actually worked on it one evening and became very frustrated so I stopped and then worked on it a couple of days later. My advice is that it takes 2 people to handle it but also so that 1 can look at it while the other is making adjustments. Actually, once I calmed down the 2nd day, had it mounted, it didnt take all that much to get it perfectly lined up. It just take patience.

And after you do get it aligned, drill some 1/8th-inch holes through the mounting points. Then use the drill bit as an indexing tool to align the parts if ever it has to be taken apart.

co425... thanks for posting the procedure/guidelines. Reps given. I've learned to live with it so I'll take a crack at it again.

Thanks, CO425. I was going to take another crack at adjusting the hood on my Crew tomorrow. Left front fender to door clearance and hood alignment have driven me crazy since I finished painting it.

Very good advice, thanks for the post! I had the same issue when lining up my hood a few weeks ago. Since I am new at this I also struggled and decided to rest a bit and placed the hood next to the wall, forgot for a slight moment that its very top heavy and fell over (Rookie Error).

I will need to remove the dent and respray it again...

Will use these tips to get it in place next time!

Reading through CO425's description I agree with removing the latch. I was attempting to adjust mine and almost couldn't get my hood opened because of the adjustments I had made.

Thanks for posting the procedure, mine needs some work still!

Thanks, co425. Got mine adjusted yesterday. I had been using the rear bolts as my pivot. Your instructions helped a lot.

Hood suppor framework

The hood support frame work on my 1967 Ford F100 Step Side has broken loose from the hood. Is there a special adhesive used to fasten it back to the hood?
