Part out or sell?

Now that I have a new 2012 6.7L Super Duty, I need to dispose of my 1997 Expedition 4x4 EB. Looking at Craigslist in our area, I thnk I can get around $5500 for it. The problem is, the engine blew (rear bearing spun, like a lot of '97s) and at the time I thought I would keep it forever. So I overhauled the engine (had a shop overhaul it after I pulled it, took it apart and read the overhaul manual and decided it was beyond my skill level and equipment level). So I have some money tied up in that.
There are some other small problems with the truck that will make it less desirable as a whole unit too. For instance, worn driver seat (tears in the leather), paint clear coat is flaking, interior paint flaking in places, small crack in the windshield and more.

So I'm wondering if I might do better parting it out, then sending the left overs to salvage.

Have any of you tried this? Any success/failure stories out there to help me decide?

EDIT PS: I have an '85 F-250 6.9L single cab in the same boat.

I would cut your losses and just sell it for what you can, it could take you over a year to part it out and then you would have to deal with the headache of dealing with people coming to your place to get parts off of it.

parting a car is a lot of work, and not worth it if you have the option of getting rid of the whole thing. You will get good money for the eng. and trans. the rest is nickle and dime stuff that just gets old.
I would sell it

What if the "whole" price was much lower, like $2000? I'm going to lose a lot of money on that. I might as well find a place to keep it and let it sit until it becomes a classic for that much.

$2000 might be better than no thousand. I doubt that these will become classics in the next 30 years. By then it will have become one with the earth and probably not worth even that. Most times it is better to cut your losses, or spend the dough to make it serviceable again.

Like these guys said, sell it whole and be done with it. No headaches.

nobodys putting a gun to your head. come up with a fair high number to place a add with and keep the bottom dollar amount you'll take in your head. put OBO with the ad and see where it goes. sell it for what YOU feel is fair.

the issues you describe are all very minor and not out of place for a '97. i dont see why you could not get 4k so long as its not totally hailed out and you have paper work of the new motor...ect
