Random miss

Well, I had a miss and got it resolved. Car ran great for 2 weeks, now it is missing again, and under powered. I am not setting any codes, but I can feel it. More noticeable at lower RPM.

I have just done plugs, and used the autolite platinum and gaped them to the spec on the rad. about .055. This was after solving more persistent issues.
I am at a loss now, and thought I would ask for advice again, before going back to the dealer for another diag.

Thanks
Doug

Is it your 03 expy ? Could be as simple as a coil boot or cop assy . You could save a lot of money if you buy a code reader and do it yourself . You can buy a reader for as little as $30 . A fair one for $100 . Get some codes , do some research . If nothing else , go to your local chain parts store , have them pull codes . As cheep as code readers are now , everyone should have one ! One that can graph , freeze frame , mode 6 , ect ... $350.00. Good to go !

I have a inova 3100a. But there are no codes. It does not do live data or anyhing like that.
I have fixed what it was giving me, and it ran good for a couple of weeks. Now it is back....
replaced computer, Plugs, MAF and IAC
So I am at a loss.

Did you change the coil boots ? You could have one or more bad ones . You should change them each time you change the plugs .

Also , mode 6 can show missfires that have not set codes yet . Your code reader probably does not support that mode .

I did not change the plug boots, Spring also? The boots were very hard to get out.
My code reader is old, so if I buy a new one what do you recommend, so that I get the best options. for a reasonable price.

Change the boots and springs . Ck coil contact , for spring , for a coroded connection . I like the Launch C reader for an inexpensive scan tool . they have a newer one with a color display . I have both .they will give live data and graph live data as well as all 10 modes of obd 2 in the newer one . Otc makes a good one also . I have an older Otc that is great , It will do more than the Launch . But the Otc cost $1200.00 . The launch readers were $150 and $240. I have tried a few brands from the parts stores and was not happy . But my Snap On Modis has me spoiled . Hard to live up to that one .

One more thing, I installed motorcraft platinum plugs. And gapped them with a sliding spark plug tool. Read somewhere that this could ruin the plug?
I will get boots and springs. and go from there.
Thanks again!

Was changing the plugs again, and the boots and springs. May have found something, the spade in the COP on some of them is rusted. So I have scraped at it and sprayed them, then will apply silicone grease. Anyone got a better way to clean them short of replacement?
I think this will cause misfires?

The connector needs to be clean . dielectric grease is good . If it still misfires , the coil is bad . That is , if you have no other issues causing a misfire . Injector, plug , valve , ect.

Got them all changed, and cleaned. Still missing. But not all of the time.
I disconnected every COP and injector and they all cause a steady miss. The one I have is random. And then I heard sounds from the intake.
This was not getting many responses, so I started another thread about the sound.
Maybe I should have kept it here? Lub dub hiss is what it shounds like. One of the three accompany the miss. I am thinking I have a lifter or two that are starting to have issues. I am going to start it and see if the exhast sounds the same, but it is further away and more muffled.
Going to hange the oil to 10-30 from the 5-20 that is in it now.

Misfire and popping from intake is usually a lean run condition . Ck fuel pres. Ck for vac. leaks while at it . Ck fuel filter also . Lean pop sounds like what you describe . Low fuel pres. will cause a lean pop sound from intake , misfires , ect . The mod engines do not have many " lifter " issues .

Ok, I will get a gauge Monday and check the pressure. It is due for the oil change, So I will do that, no issues with 10-30 for one change is there? if so I will take it back and get the 5-20.
Thanks again for your help, and not giving up on me.

10-30 vs 5-20 . Don't sweat one change . If you are in sub zero temps , Worry ! Ck pressure , firing , get a scan done . Let us know ! Good luck !

the car has no light, so my code reader is useless. And I can not get into ford for another week. I will call again Monday and see if it is any better. I guess I got to get a better reader too.
