Diesel Additive??

Diesel Additive??
I've been told that all of the big three diesels now require an additive to the fuel and that there is a special tank added in the truck for it. Can someone explain what this is and how it works?

Be gentle, I'm no mechanic or powerplant engineer.

The new engines use diesel exhaust fluid DEF, it is used to control emissions. It's simple just fill tank its nothing to worry about.

I bought my car 2 weeks ago and had no idea what DEF was until a smog tech buddy said it's UREA, first thing that came to mind was "****"!?
