I just rebuilt a 302 out of an E150, what a nightmare! Long story short, don't trust any aftermarket manufacturer (Wrong Cam) and fuel injection needs fuel pressure to run. After that being said, I now have a problem with my speedometer and digital display... They don't work and I don't know why. With my limited knowledge of computers in vehicles I managed to use a star tester to get a code.... Actually two codes, one was for the EGR valve (go figure) and one was the VSS "input signal insufficient" (452). I can drive the van, it seems to run and drive fine... Maybe shifting alittle too quick from 1-2 but nothing to write to Ford about. What should be my next course of action? Replace the VSS on the axle, replace the dash speedo or replace the PSOM??? I really could use some advise about now.... Thanks.
You should pull the ABS sensor from the rear axle and clean the metal shavings off it. If there are a LOT, pull the fill plug and see how bad it is - it has a magnet. If you find it covered, you'll need to service your axle and find out why it's chewing itself up.
If there are no metal shavings, you can replace the sensor (I think they're cheap) &/or diagnose the circuit from it to the PSOM & RABS computer.
I pulled the module in the rear end, it has very light metal shavings on it. Nothing more than I would have suspected with 113K on it. Would you know it, I got the wrong sensor from Murrays. If it wasn't for bad luck, I wouldn't have any!!!
I checked the voltage at the connector, it was just under 5V. I also tested the cruise, it didn't work. One question, why doesn't my digital display work??? I figured it would display something. I'll replace the rear end pickup tomorrow, updates to follow... Thanks.
Replaced the sensor in the rear end, that didn't correct my problem with the speedo. The digital display still isn't working either. I'm in the process of taking the dash out, are there screws in the vents that may hold the front cover on. I thought it would come off when I got the screws on the bottom of the dash and the two just above the speedo, but something is still holding it firm. Does anyone have an easier way to get this off, my chiltons manual isn't cutting the mustard.
Check here for better instructions. There are several spring clips on the cluster bezel like the ones that hold the 2 trim bars over the bezel screws, so you have to pull.
You also have to get the headlight ****, but that link shows how - all you need is a small hook probe.
