Got my 51 frame done, and the '53 block just about rebuilt, and just realized I don't have a fan blade, and I can't seem to find one at all the usual places (macs, speedway, lmc, obsolete...). Seems the '48 to '51' fan blades are different part numbers, but they look identical to me. (8 bolts). The '53 fan mount/pulley just seem simpler than the '51. Any ideas where I could find one? Thanks!
for a flathead v8 I assume? ive got some extra fanblade assemblies for flatheads from different years. mostly of a 6 blade type if thats what you need?
Josh
ive also got a narrow pully 3 blade fan and hub too. its only about 14.5" diameter on the fan blades. figured that might have been off a merc??
the fan blades dont bolt on though, looks like a fixed assembly.
Ill look through the collection tonight when i get home to see whats there.
Since I don't have one, I only have some diagrams (classicautoparts.com shows an illustration of the 48-51 assembly) but all the images I have found (google images of 53 flathead engines) show a 4 blade fan. And yes, its a Flathead V-8. I forget there is any other kind of engine! :-) I have attached a pic of the 'assembly', all ready for its whirling brother. Thanks for any leads guys and gals. Mark
My understanding is that '53 Truck engines used the same type of large hub as 48-52 Trucks, but with a narrow-belt sheave. The car fans from early '50's-on had three (four on Merc) blade fans with a sealed cartridge ball bearing, like below. That is what I'm using and have had no cooling issues (with clean engine, shroud, deflectors, etc).

Ive got a few of the 6 blade fans with the eight bolt holes to attach.
but seeing your picture I'm not sure how the other blades attach.
seems the 4 blade fans only have 4 bolts?
here is a picture of a 6blade fan and assembly as well as a 4 blade setup, this four blade fan is riveted to the hub. (sorry for the bad pictures, dark and no flash)
I was browsing Ebay and there a few different ones on there, not sure exactly what you need though. Good Luck finding it.
Josh
Also looks like your fan is alot farther away from the pulley than both of these that I took pictures of?
Josh, is the 6 blade (3rd picture) 3 1/8" diameter from center to center of the bolts? Those are bolts holding it on, not rivets it appears. Thanks. Mark

Dunno what Merc had, no 1949/59 Merc parts catalog, but would assume it would be the same. I owned a '53 Merc with O/D...52 years ago.

yes the 6 blade fan has the eight bolts holding it on. and they are 3&1/8" apart.
