How important are the reinforcement pieces on the fender? Like where they bolt to the running boards, and the back of the rear fenders. Im asking because im almost done with rust repair on one rear fender and wondering if it is worth it to reinforce those areas since the reinforcements are what caused the rust that im fixing. Plus it seems to me that the fender is bolted at enough places that it really doesnt need anything extra.
Since it took 60 years for the doubled areas to rust out to the point you had to repair them, I wouldn't worry too much about rust. There are also corrosion inhibitors you can use that will retard the degradation even more that Ford never used if you're still concerned.
Whether or not you feel you need to add extra support for thin sheet metal to keep bolts from tearing through your newly repaired fenders is up to you. They do flex and vibrate pretty good there. Personally, I'd be more concerned about that than rust.
I'm with Merc on this one, The reinforcement plates are needed because the frame and body does twist and flex as you drive. All your hard work will crack right back out if you don't put them back in.
When I put doublers in, I lay down some weld through primer before welding them in place, that way there is some protection against rust.
