New seats in my truck and now need to put in tilt steering due to clearance issues. On a budget this time of year so I would like to get something from the junkyard to save money. Have some fab. skills and a weld so I can do some mod. if necessary. Would like to keep orginal steering column look if possible but not necessary. Pics would be nice if you have some, thanks.
Orginal would be nice but not necessary. Been toying with the idea for awhile but with new seats really becoming necessary. I love the look of are columns, slim with cone shape and would like to find something similar looking if possible. I have looked at 80's bronco and mustangs, I like the look but they don't have column shift. Really want to keep column shift.
Read about people putting in 80's van columns in, don't know how hard they are to get in. Some people say there easy others say not so easy. Have also read where some people have put in old cadililac or thunderbird colums that can go up down and sideways but I have never seen any in the junkyard.
If you have done a tilt let me know what the column came out of problems you had getting in. Pics would always be nice. Thanks.
To add to what Bill suggested for direct bolt up fit, the steering column is probably the most adaptable part of a vehicle. Custom builders have been doing this for years. You can look in cars, vans, trucks for something that you like. Some will have ign. sw. on them some not.
You should be able to find something to your liking and with your skills make it fit.
Mid 1960's, 1970's Cadillacs with tilt wheels also have another feature. There is a lever on the backside of the wheel that when moved, you can pull the wheel towards you. The wheel only, not the column.
im just gonna put a smaller steering whell in so i can stay original easily if i want to go back
I have an aftermarket steering wheel I want to put on today which should help but really want as much room as possible. I did an electric power base off an explorer on the seats and want to take full advantage of the adjustment for max comfort.
Thought about shorten the column but I don't think that will help much since the steering wheel moves closer to your lap when colomn is shorten. The cad. would be nice if I could find one, the seats I put in came out of a cad. They where 60/40 I cut down down to bucket size so I could put in a sub box in between the seats.
Looking for any/all ideas so I have an idea of what to look for when I go the junkyard. The yards I go to (3 diffferent yards same co.) has online inventory so if I have an idea of what to look for I can do some checking before I go.
ND do you happen to know how far into the 70's the cad steering was put in. Might be nice to have all those adjustments. If I know years I could do some checking online before I go to the JY.
I had a '66 Fleetwood Brougham, a friend had a 1970 Coupe de Ville, both had this setup. 1971 Cadillac featured a new body, are big long ugly tubs, I never had any interest.

Thanks that should help, still looking for any/other ideas. Got to go crawl under my dash and finish the wiring for my stereo install. Should have done that before I put the seats in but want to see what the seats would look like. I will check back later to see what else pops up. Thanks for the help so far!
You might check out the 78/79 f-100/150 tilt with auto trany shifter on it. Ford may have made them with out a shifter for the 4/sp. I'm not sure. I used the 79 auto column , tilt in my 73 , but the the dash is the same as a 79. I'm not sure how well they would fit your older truck.

I've read that there were tilt columns for 4-speeds but are really rare. 'never seen one.
IIRC, Flaming River and Ididit offer tilt columns sized for manual tranny Bumps and Dents... kinda pricey but they are available.

Oldsmobile had them to, and maybe Corvette but I won't swear to it. I have saved some interesting tilt columns. Late 70s chevy van seems like a good one, the ignition was still in the dash so it isn't fat and ugly. I just pulled one from a 65 LeSabre last week that I am keeping back to (hopefully) put into my 60 F-100.
Still the 78-79 pickup and Bronco is the best but they are getting a little pricey.
Some good ideas thanks! Like the idea or the caddy steering column. Now I can look online before I go to the junkyard and have some ideas what to look for.
