300 six head/build question

So I'm planning out my 300six build on my 83 f-100 and could use some thoughts from other who have done this type of build.

Definite build items so far.
Clifford Intake ( I think I'm covered for Carb heat Also have one of the old 390 Ford heated carb spacers if I need more)
Edelbrock 500CFM
EFI Manifolds
Walker split Y
Serpentine Belt Conversion

So my questions revolves around how far I want to go with the head.

Is it worth it to dig up a 240 head for the compression bump and have it ported and polished or just stick with having my original head worked over?
What should I expect a shop to charge me for P&P and a good valve job?

Any recommendations on a cam? Truck is a driver that I use for Lumber store runs, not really a daily driver but needs to be reliable yet be able to roast a little rubber on occasion.

Thanks for the consideration. This place has been a great source of info and I look forward to sharing once I start into this project.

Are you going to have the bottom end rebuilt? If so, just use the head you've got and raise the compression with the pistons and/or decking the block. How much for a P&P and valve job? Depends on the shop and what you expect. Could be $300, could be $750 or more. Factor in cleaning, pressure testing, resurfacing, etc. and you're looking at a minimum of $500. At least here in Dallas you would be.

Thanks Baron, I was not planning on having the lower end rebuilt at this point, but something to consider if I ever get that deep into it.

just as a recommendation, since you plan on doing the head work and installing a cam possibly...at least crack open the bottom end and make sure you don't find any surprises. the piston skirts were prone to cracking and fragments have often been found in pans. do a compression test and leakage check on the cylinders as well...so at least you'll have a good starting point. it might reveal some other issues that you could address as you work on your project. not saying rebuild the whole thing...but doing a little homework now, can easily save you headaches and tons of coin later down the road. enjoy the project and post up how it turns out...everyone puts their own flavor into their 300 builds. its always cool to see what the next guy is gonna come up with!

Good point, it won't take much to drop the pan and do a compression check, especially on the old six. I've been collecting parts for a while and hope to pull the old girl into the garage this weekend after making some space.I'll take some pics before I get started so everyone can see.
