Scrap or keep

Next week I plan on making a run to the scrap yard to get some cash for some old iron.

Question: up in second floor of my garage I have the original radiator from my '54 F-100. The radiator shop told me it was better form me to find another than to fix my old one. Several tubes were bad. Should I scrap it or keep it? What is a radiator worth as scrap?

Thanks, Abe

Can it not be re-cored? Some people will gladly pay a bit more for the real deal. If it is not taking up too much space, keep it. List it in the FTE classifieds.

I think it was better for THEM that you bought a new one.

Oh, I didn't buy a new one. I found a good one in a junk yard.

About how much to re-core a radiator? The one in my truck now is from a 6 cyl and the outlet hole is on the right. A V-8 radiator has the outlet hole in the center, I think...

Don't know what it would cost, Abe. I did not realize that you had gone from a six to eight cylinder, in that case it would be better for you to install a larger radiator. But really, someone might want it

I don't know about your area but here the last copper/brass radiator I scrapped I got $1.50 a pound. But You need to remove any steel from it.

Maybe I didn't explain well enough earlier. The truck was and still is a V8. The radiator I found was from a 6 cyl. We had to get a real long radiator hose to reach from the 6 cyl rad to the engine (the original yblock).

I will ask the radiator shop what it would cost to recore it.

I got about $35 for the radiator from my '49. But then this showed up at my house about a week ago, just like magic. Haven't put it in yet but it sure is pretty, assuming it works it was well worth it.

I took my 6-cylinder original radiator to a radiator shop last year for a quote. It has several holes along the top and bottom right at the edge of the core.

They quoted me $600!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I walked out of there stunned, because there are only a couple of radiator shops left around here and that one was recommended as the best one to go to price-ways. He explained how it had to be completely disassembled, washed, brazed, straightened, re-assembled, pressure-tested, painted, hazardous waste disposal, etc. etc. etc. At something like $80 an hour plus parts it would take someone the better part of a day to do it.

I still haven't gotten it fixed...in denial....and hoping a better radiator falls from heaven or mine magically repairs itself. For now I have other parts of the truck that have to get fixed before I'll need to run the engine.

The re-core costs do take your breath away. I was quoted about $500 for a re-core on a I6 radiator a year ago by a good shop. Ended up with new from LMC for less than half that.

Still haven't had the heart to scrap out the old one - Abe, Pinecone, and I are hoping for the same garage elf to show up.

Abe, keep the radiator. I had mine recored in 2003 by the radiator shop in Reamstown. It cost $400 then, but I'm really happy with it. I drag race the truck and pull a camper with it and it doesn't overheat.

By the way, I'm pulling the motor out soon, we're putting a 312 crank in the 239. I was up to see Ober yesterday, the crank and rods are done. He said to come up next saturday and he's going to let me cut the skirts down on the 272 pistons that we're using. I was going to use a die grinder, but he offered to let me use his shop. He must have a machine just for milling pistons, he said we could do all 8 in an hour.

I'll have to take pictures and do an article for y block magazine. Dennis

If it only has a couple of tubes that are bad, I'd have them plugged and call it good. BTW can't they take the tank from the V8 radiator and put it on the 6-cyl one?

I have $400 in the recored radiator in my 53 sedan. It was way more than I expected to pay. However I haven't seen a proper looking reproduction radiator for the 6 cyl so I paid up. I really want my car to look as stock as possible.
