replacing a tie rod tomarro and my front pinion seal is leaking where the front 4x4 drive shaft goes in. i searched and searched and found no info anywhere.
is it as simple as remove front drive shaft, remove big nut ,remove front yoke, pull seal out and insert new one and resemble? or im i missing something?
Quite a bit. The nut needs to be replaced. It's use once only item.
Before you remove the nut you need to take a few measurements
so that you don't have to use a new crush sleeve and a very LARGE
Toque Wrench. There are some short cuts but I would not take it that way.
the rear 10.5 sterling goes on at 470ish. I did not look up the
front specs but I do know you have that crush sleeve to deal with.
The best way is to replace the sleeve and reset the pre-load.
The less work is pull the ring gear out and don't loose the shims
and clocking, With the ring gear out take a in/Lb torque wrench
and see how much is needed to turn the pinion and make note of
that. remove the nut and pull the yoke and seal. Install new seal
with some RTV on it (If you want to use RTV)then the yoke in the
same splines that it was on. place the nut on and slowly work the torque
up to the # that you recorded earlier. Don't go past that # and if you
do don't back it off or the pre-load will be screwed up and you will
need to start from scratch.
There are some fair how to do it on YouTube and only slightly screw it up.
If the setups are not right you can end up with a growler and bearing damage.
