does anyone know a neat trick for replacing a pinion seal on a 78 F150 2X4 , we still have snow on the ground and im trying to avoid laying on it as much as possible, many thanks ,bob
Pull off the rear shaft, take the pinion nut off the pinion(this will be the nut holding on the yoke),slide off the yoke and pop out the pinion seal.Install the new one and assemble in reverse order of removal.Torque the pinion nut to at least 150 ft lbs, also you should use a new pinion nut.
Remove the drive shaft from the yoke.
Remove the 5 bolts holding the whole pinion to the housing.
Pull the pinion assembly out and take in inside.
Remove the yoke nut and yoke. (a $20 flywheel puller works nice).
You might also want to mark the yoke, shaft and nut so you can put it back together the same way.
Pull the pinion out.
Pull the seal and install the new one.
Reassmeble the pinion, yoke, and nut. Torque to specs or tighten to the mark you made (I prefer torquing).
Take it outside and bolt -er back on.
