I have been having an interesting problem with the indicator lamp(s) on my '08 Ranger. When I turn the light switch to either PARK or HEAD positions the indicator light usually only lights for the PARK position. Once in awhile the lamp(s) will illuminate all therr positions. I have checked the Ford factory shop manual for a clue and have had no luck in finding out what the problem may be. Is there only one lamp or are there 3 lamps in the switch assembly?
Any ideas or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
My 03 only one bulb for the background illumination on the light switch which is what I assume you are referring to. Mine has burned out multiple times. It is wired to be on any time the engine is running regardless of whether lights are on or not. Stupid setup and the reason the bulbs don't last long. They may have changed it on your model year but would be surprise if they did.
There used to be a pictorial link on a website that have yet to locate. Here is a written explanation of disassembly to get to it. Once switch is removed the bulb is mounted in a circular assembly (with an X on it) that using a screwdriver you rotate counter clockwise to remove. Can either buy a replacement from ford or buy a grain of wheat type bulb from radio shack and wire in place of the original. After this last burnout think I will not mess with mine again. Some have converted the bulb to an LED . Since yours lights at times it may simply be loose in the socket.
