Remote start question/ issue

Just bought 2012 F250 SD Crew 4X4, 6.7L,,,

Quick question on the remote start.... I got the 100 series plug and play... at the retail parts counter...
was under impression that truck came remote start "ready"... instructions dealer gave me said dealer has to do it
... DSI Box to program truck??,

I can see them needing to cut the new keys and even program the keys to make it easy...

but its an antenna and a Jumper wiring harness... you just plug it in....

they want $250 labor!!!!!

by the time I pay all that, I could have gotten the Viper with the GPS tracking on my phone!!!

Is The dealer ripping me off????

I am going in at 8am to see service manager and find out real scoop.....
Why did they sell it to me ... If I can't do anything with it, without a dealer install?

By the way, I called and asked labor before I ordered it and was told $150... figured for that much I would do it myself.... It is suddenly $250.....

I have the Auto trans, powerlocks, Hood switch and tpms it says I need..

A little much

I did the same thing you have done except I installed myself.

To answer your question, the labor might be OK depending on if it includes the flash. The flash is typically 100 bucks at a dealership. However, If you bought the truck there, they should comp you the flash.

It worked like this for me since I bought the truck at the dealership I got the part from:

1. ordered and got BC3Z-19G364-A

You can get the part anywhere and usually cheaper...try Tasca Parts or EBay

2. Installed myself. Literally 2 screws and a tie down for the cable. Took 20 mins to figure out the orientation and 3 mins to actually install. Goes right above the glove box (which you remove prior to install with an easy action that takes 15 seconds tops)

3. Had the keys cut at Ace Hardware and programmed the keys for use on the vehicle myself using online directions. There are two programming things to do: 1). For the chip in the key so it will start the vehicle; 2). Program the remote on the key to unclock/lock the truck (The key is already programmed to start the truck nothing to do there).

Go to this website and read the last 2 sets of instructions (skip the first instruction for keypad programming).

Instructions and Videos on programming Ford PATS Keys « fullerisford.com

4. Had the vehicle flashed for free. Also got daytime running lights set to on during that same flash for insurance discount

Long and short is you can order the part cheaper online (unless you just cant wait for shipping and all that) and install yourself. If you bought the truck there or sweet talk them you should get the flash for free.

That means you pay for the part and that's it.

Let me know if I have led you astray anywhere or if you have further questions.

Forgot something: You can always try to start the truck after you install without the flash. You may get lucky and it may already be set to on in the PCM. Probably not...but after you program the key try it. I think the way to tell is to cycle through your info center (I have the upgraded LCD) and go to Settings | Vehicle | Remote Start. If that is there I think you have it flashed already and can then turn the feature On/Off.

Thanks.

I ordered same part, and dealer printed instructions.... that proved dealer only for the install because of the flash to turn remote start to "oN"

They looked it up, and official labor is 1/2 hour to install this kit... I ended up paying $205 plus tax for the part and $59 to have it put in.

Ford customer service told me to let dealer cut keys... if they mess one up it is covered by the 12/12000 parts warranty... If ACE or Home depot cut keys and mess it up.. you have to buy a replacement key.

But putting the antenna and jumper wire is easy and the key programming seems simple too... just no key machine or IDS box to flash truck... so the $59 was a no brainer... just glad it was not the $250 they quoted yesterday

I think that's a great deal. You got everything you need not to mention a useful feature that, I believe, adds lifetime your engine.

One thing we all forget is that our time is worth something and performing maintenance ourselves still has a cost...time is money. I think it all comes down to preference. Personally, I like the challenge and the subsequent knowledge I gain that I can pass onto others in the same boat...just no warranty

When I first read your posting I thought it was practically a crime to charge $250 for just the install. $59 is a good price for that work. I think the dealership did OK by you... in my opinion.

I got my remote start installed by the dealer. I have the key to lock and unlock doors and panic button, but also have a separate key fob for the remote start I have to carry with the key (which I don't like). Sounds like if you guys are getting keys cut then you end up with one key that does everything (lock, unlock, panic, and remote start)? Is that correct? I asked the dealer if I could get key with the remote start on it and I was told only if you order it from the factory with the remote start option. Was I given a line of BS?

Maybe not a line of BS.... it seems the dealers don't see alot of these kits... in the 100 series plug and play kit the remote star button is in the blank spot that is on the factory key. It is a one directional system( no feedback that the truck actually started. I think the kits with the extra Start FOB are bi directional( signals you that truck actually started) and they work from fatrher away. My 100 series kit has only like a 300ft range like normal lock/unlock key fob.

Okay, so there are different remote start's out there. Did not know that. Not sure how far away mine will actually start from. Thanks for the info!
