This was back in Idaho in 74, and it was finely dried alfalfa probably bailed with a 100 hp JD with a Freeman 16"x18" baler. The bales were designed to be picked up with a NH harobed so there wouldn't be any need to manhandle them typically.The next year we bought our own hayground so we had them baled to around 60-70# bales with a 14"x16" baler.

You don't need the 3/4 ton rear end just the springs or better yet some air bags. With air helpers you'll retain the decent ride and inflate them when you have a big load.
