Anybody have any idea what load--8-foot bed-- of firewood weighs? I was loading my 96 150 up with wood the other day, got it up to the windows on my cap and the guy dropping the tree says "I wouldn't over load that truck." I figured a load of wood is nowhere near a half ton. Am I underestimating the weight of the wood?
Don't know what kind of wood you were hauling, but since you're in IL we'll assume oak. From memory a cord (4'x4'x8') of green oak weighs around 4400 lbs. Pine is around 2700/cord if I remember right. Just above the box rail is about half that much.
Wood is heavy stuff....only put in what you can before the rear sags too low. If the rear end is draggin on the ground I think ya got alil too much hah
I work for my dad who owns a tree business. He has a 96 F150 that we load up with wood all the time. It is heavy stuff but if you take your time where you are going and give your self extra stopping room you will be fine. Just be smart and don't be in a hurry. Plus, it's a Ford, it likes it!
Thanks for the info, by the way it was locust wood. Matt, if I split this wood into smaller pieces will it be seasoned enough to burn in say January? I just got it this week and I have heard locust takes a long time to season.
We make it a rule to season the wood for at least a year after it is split. It MAY be fine but probably not. Especially with it starting to get cooler in the next few months. You might get lucky though.
An 8 ft bed filled with firewood weighs more than most of us would imagine. When I split firewood (green), and fill up my F-250's bed, it sets it down quite a bit. I'm guessing that a full load of green hardwood would run 3K to 4K. As Beast12 mentioned, your truck will take it.
As far as seasoning is concerned. Given decent air circulation, that wood will be ready to burn in 3 months. If need to burn a greener wood, burn any ash first. For some reason ash needs little seasoning.
This thread reminds me that it is time to get hot working on this season's firewood!

The wood MIGHT be ready by January but probably not. I was talking to my dad and he said the same thing. Ash is totally different. I have heard of people splitting it and burning it the same week. Good stuff!
