Are you talking about the temp gauge. If so, I have been running autometer for about eight years and have had no problems. I actually had a bung welded into the pan and am checking pan fluid temps. Mine runs slightly over 100 degrees during the cool months and does get in the 150 range during the summer. If towing it will get up around 170. I have 170k with this setup and transmission is still shifting fine and has good power.
I have been happy with an Autometer trans temp gauge.
The last batch of Autometer gauges I ordered had extremely fragile backlight housings, which shattered when you tried to lock the backlight housing into the back of the gauge. Autometer sent me 3 more backlights, free of charge, but they were equally fragile. I carefully filed each one so that it fit with less tension into the hole (it's a bayonet lug engagement system). I suspect Autometer is using recycled feedstock in these plastic bulb mounts, so beware when you start assembling these.
Turtleracing, I'm using the Isspro EV2 trans gauge with good results. Had it for about 3 years now. I'm curious what model yours was and what kind of trouble it was giving you.
I believe they are the EV1 but not sure. All I know is I have replaced it several times and have the same problem after a while. Needle just starts going crazy and after some research I have found I am not the only one.
Funny thing is I have Pyro and boost with no issues, but that trans temp is ridiculous.
My trans temp gauge is goofy too, its an ev2. Reads 30 degrees hotter than the fluid really is, and goes nuts from time to time. Ive checked the wiring, and cant find any reason for this behavior.......interesting
Not every time, but occasionally, on the first start of the day, my EV2 trans gauge will do several full sweeps of the dial, like it's calibrating or something. Maybe 9-10 times. Then goes to zero and starts the normal climb from there as the trans heats up. At night, it's a bit brighter than my other dash gauges, but I'm told a variable resistor inline is helpful for that.
The 30 degrees hotter is curious. How did you discover that? Hotter is better than cooler I guess.
mine does the full sweep crap all the time too. I discovered the temp reading being wrong after towing a load, said my temp was 230, and this was just after a new tranny. Drained some fluid from the external filter and put a temp gauge in it. Said 150 degrees. Did that a few times since then, as my gauge says 150 in the winter, temp gauge dipped in the oil shows 120 usually. Fluid is still bright red, so I know 230 never happened......
I caught my last ISSPRO being way off on temp too, but thought it was because it was going through one of its crazy sweeping fits. When it would calm down it read 230-250 and I put a temp gauge on the oil pan that said 160.
I just don't trust the ISSPRO gauge at all and this is getting ridiculous. Mine isn't just when cold, it's very random. When it really starts going bad it does it all the time. I have had them last months, I have had one last over a year. In 4 years of having gauges, I think it's ridiculous to replace any one gauge this many times and ISSPRO is no help at all when you call them.
Do a google search, you will find there are a lot of problems with this and it's too bad ISSPRO does not fix the problem, they are definitely not the cheapest gauge on the market and I went with them because they were supposed to be quality.
Interesting, I have heard nothing but good things about ISSPRO... Having said that, I just don'tlike the looks of the ISSPRO gauges, they look "cheap" to me. Been running Autometer phantom II's for a little over 2 years now, no issues at all. Good luck!
Where did you buy the gauges from? Too bad Joe (CSIPSD) isn't around anymore, I'm sure he would have some help for you.
im actually still having trouble finding a sending unit...
does anyone have the specs for which one i will need to work with an auto meter sport comp temp gauge?
im looking for one that will thread into the test port on drivers side...
