siezed caliper

I was driving on the highway today when I noticed my truck pulling really hard to the left. I attempted to slow down and get off and the steering wheel started jerking back and forth pretty fast (not as bad as a death wobble though). The driver side front wheel was extremely hot to the touch. Drove a little more, got to where I was going and let it cool down for 2 hours. Drove it home and everything was back to normal. No more pulling, wheel wasn't hot when I got home. Does my caliper need to be replaced or was it just a fluke thing that happened?

Recommend replacing the caliper. I did the slide pin greasing and maintenance and found that it was only a temporary fix.

My guess is that once the caliper gets overheated, the phenolic pistons become deformed and tend to stick (educated guess).

Caliper replacement fixed those problems on my '06. I suspect that the new liquid road salt that is used causes the calipers to stick. Once they are severely overheated, they are toast. Our trucks will happily provide all the power needed to heat a rotor to a dull red color......

Mine wasn't nearly that bad, I was expecting the rotor to be red but it looked fine. If it ever does this again, I will replace the caliper but I'm going to wait and see for now.

What is the slide pin greasing?

Yeah, I had a similar problem but didn't know it. The truck drove fine but when that front wheel was off the ground you couldn't spin it by hand. The dealer spotted it during a routine service and offered to replace both front calipers for me. How nice of them, right?! $800!

I took it back home and checked it out myself. There was rust buildup where the brake pad sits in the caliper causing it to not slide back away from the rotor. The drag caused it to heat up. I fixed it myself by cleaning away the rust and greasing the clips on the pads and all is good now. Cost $0 plus an hour of my time.
