Sorry if this question is already answered on here somewhere but I couldn't find it. My truck is getting way up there in miles, 180,000. I'm looking at buying a rebuilt engine and just swapping them. If I buy the same 5.4 2valve from the same year (2001) is there anything special that needs to be done to get it to run? Will the PCM know that the engine is different and stop it from running or can I just drop the new engine in and hook it up? Thanks for any advice.
First, if your engine is still good, don't repalce it just for the mileage.
Mine is at 184,000 and will be going for 225 to 250,000, then it's another truck not an engine, after 12 years.
Same year motor just replaces the old one.
The computer does not know the difference.
Good luck.
Thanks for the info. I plan on keeping the truck until it rusts away and right now it has no rust so that will be a while. I just don't want to get caught without it at some point because of an engine problem. I haven't really heard great things about these engines. Seems the 2 valve engine doesn't have problems with the spark plug breaking but sometimes removes spark plugs on it's own. Guess they all have their own problems.
The plug blowout issue was mainly the 5.4 up to 2001.
After 2004 and the advent of the redesigned head to allow for camshaft control and 3 valves, different plugs were used that resulted in a problem when plugs left in place to long.
Normally not a good thing but ***** happens now and then until it's corrected.
Good luck.
I was wondering if there is a build date that the blow out problem was corrected after. I just bought a 2001. Don't know if any plugs have been changed or holes repaired. Runs fine right now. Just wondering if this is an issue I may have to deal with.
My truck has 256 on the clock and runs great. As long as you keep your oil changed 5k, every , your fluids checked, follow manufacturers scheduled maintenance, flush your trans every 50k... you'll be ok. The main factor I've seen in vehicle failures is lack of maintenance. Be rigorous and vigorous about maintenance and the vehicle will last you a long time.
