2001 f250 5.4 Engine Replacement Help
I have a 2001 F-250 super duty with a 5.4 engine and 250,000 miles. The truck has developed an engine knock on the bottom end (I have confirmed this).
What is my best options for replacement? I bought the truck with the bad engine for $800.
I’m aware that the spark plugs seem to blow out of the hole a lot on these engines. And if at all possible I would like to avoid this happening to the replacement engine I am installing.
My question is would it be better to:
1.have my heads remachined and all the spark plug holes on both heads rethreaded by a reputable machine shop and get a reman shortblock?
2.Or get a low mileage used engine?
3.Or get a reman engine that has had all the spark plug threads repaired?
4.Or is there a better solution other than what I have just stated?
I am a mechanic, but not a ford engine expert. Im basically a honda-toyota guy. But I am certainly not big on my pride that I cant get advice from some guys that know these engines inside and out.
Any tips, advice, suggestions or anything you might want to share that could help me id be very appreciative. Thanks.
Spark plug blow out isnt as common as you think. I have owned 4 modular ford engines and i know a lot of people that drive them and no one i know have had this issue. Although it does happen. Most of the people that get on the interenet to ask questions are the few that usually have the problems. People that dont have the issue dont come on the net saying that there truck doesnt have a single issue. Just some thing to think about.
Do a compression check on the engine, see if the pistons/rings are still great. If so, might be worth just putting new bearings in the bottom end.
