i have inheirited this truck. it was my great grandpa's sunday truck that had 50,000 miles on it then my grandpa put another 51,000 on it in less than a year. it is a 1992 ford f150 xlt with a 4.9 efi 2wd and the e40d trans. it has an open diff 3.08s. my questions are is this a good set of wheels? how well will it do in the winter with snow here in nw iowa. will i need chains. also i can not do anything major to it cuase my mom says it reminds her of her siblings that are gone and i cant sell it trade it or change anything major on it. this being said what can i do to make it faster. i know it has a low redline like 3500 rpm. as an example it took me awhile to convince my mom to let me put subs in this truck so yeah fairly limited. What can i do about the crappy alt? no one make a high output alt for the motor. thanks in advance
how do i insert a pic if i just have it saved on my 'puter
... is it a good set of wheels ? ... well, this IS a ford truck enthusiasts website so ... yes . it's not going to get you outstanding fuel economy or scintillating performance, but it will make a good daily driver or workhorse.
... if you are looking for things to fix, why not get after that cancer in the box ?
... this type of vehicle is NOT good in the snow. you will want some chains.
... for the alternator, search "3g swap" or something like that . full tutorial showing you how to do it.

I was told that all the fords of the era had rust spots like that and i believe it cause all the fords of the era around here are worse. and believe it or not it has never been driven in the winter. this winter is actually the first winter it has ever not been under a roof. and even now it is sitting by a shed in the snow cause it has a problem with dying after about eight miles or so. mechanic said it was probably ignition module as this is common i guess
