351w needs more nuts

I have a 88 f250 with a efi 351w and a c6. Truck has 70k on it. Pulls my open 16ft trailer with my car great. We bought a 24ft enclosed trailer for this year. I pulled it home (40 miles) and the truck did fine. But that was empty. Trailer empty is 3100lbs and my car is 3300lbs so I figure with everything loaded the trailer will be close to 7000lbs. My truck is stock except no cats and aerochamber muffler. Im pretty sure the rear gear is 4.10. What could be done to help the 351 out?

I'd reassure that the truck has 4.10 gears before anything else. If it does have 4.10 gears, look into long tube headers and a better exhaust set up as well as a better cam. Those are really the weak points on the windsor.

might want to add a trans cooler if you don't already have one.

I was able to pull an enclosed 28' with a 2500# car inside with mine, and I have 3.55 gears. Needless to say O/D was turned off and it was foot to the floor going up steep hills. Enclosed trailers are never fun to pull, they're giant airbrakes.

The intake, heads, and exhaust are restrictive, then add a good cam.

at what point are you going to stop and consider getting a diesel truck? your engine isn't the only need of upgrading.the c6 is getting kinda.....dated.

intake is plenty...

Heads, and cam and exhaust are the 3 needed in a EFI SBF...

I dont want a diesel. If this 351 dont do what I like then I have a 460 I can put in. I will not own another stock E4OD period they are junk. Takes to much cash to build one that wont give you fits. Its hard to beat the c6 even if its "dated".

They are junk. My 94 E350 had 2 E4s put in the 5 years I owned it. Always hunting for gears, then not wanting to go into overdrive. Never had a problem with a c6. Sure it will turn more rpm and drink some gas but is more reliable than a E4OD. I have seen 30-40 year old c6s never miss a beat hell my 74 f100 c6 is still going strong.

e40d is still waaaaaayyyyyyyyyy better than a mazdog. even if the mazdog is a 5sp manual the e4od is built better than it. i could have been worse

Sounds like the E4OD's you have had were not junk, but the vehicle they were put into had a junk electrical system.. They are completely electronically controlled, so if the system is junk so will be the transmission... Tell you what, disconnect the vacuum line and disable the valve body on that C6 and report back how good it is without it's controlls!!

So a factory equiped 94 E350 with 7.5 and E4OD from ford had a junk electrical system? Then why did it need 2 trannys in the 5 years I had it? Must have been the electronics. Or it could have been that the E4ODs stock dont like the abuse from pulling loads. My 74 F100 with a stock c6 and stock 460 with 170k on it would outpull that E350 from a stop or getting on the highway. 74 F100 has 3.70 gears, E350 had 4.10s. But I guess that has to do with electronics too. Manually shift the c6 with no vacuum line no problems. Run 10s in the 1/4 drive it home.

was it a stock 460? i dont care what anyone said stock 460s were ****. but took mods better than others. also the tranny probably broke cause the bad electronics meant the line pressure was too low or too high
