I just went out and tested it like ND suggested, and it was about -30 and then slowly returns to zero as it always does. How can I tell if its wired backwards? What should I look for?

Take the two wires off the gauge and swap them

It reads 12v and 14v when it's running so my guess is you are correct in thinking the gauge is wired backwards.
