Yes they did have hubcaps for the F-2's and F-3's. Most of these trucks did not have them because they were a work truck and hubcaps were a luxury item then. If you look at magazine ads for them from the period, they didn't have hubcaps. They are out there, but hard to get and extremely expensive. I have 3 and and I'm having the darnest time finding 1 more.
It looks like the front wheels will have no problem using the bigger size hub caps they had in PF. they were $35.00 but i didn't think they were deep enough to cover the rear hub.
They are supposed to fit front or rear. If your truck has the original rear end and rims, It shouldn't be a problem. Were the ones at PF, used, repos or NOS? There's 2 sets actually. THe blue lettered ones with no lip and the red ones with the lip. The ones with the lip were from 52-56, the others were 48-52. The later ones actually superceded (replaced) the earlier ones, so both sets are correct. I hope you got the name of that seller of those caps. That's a good price.
I just ordered one from Dennis Carpenter they are $35.00 so when i get it i will let you know just send me you E-Mail address. the guy said they are deeper than standard caps. i only ordered the one to see if it will work so we will see.
$35 is a good price if they are the right ones, I think the one for the half ton go for $25. There is a guy on eBay who had two complete NOS sets in the last two months, the last set went to $340!! I found a truck here that has three but the owner thinks the rusted out hulk is worth a fortune. There is nothing else worth anything on it.
There is another set of F-2 hub caps on eBay today(5-30-2003). I think this is the same person who had the last two or three sets posted. His user name is "so-calaz" and the current post is at: eBay hub caps
He starts them a $5 but I know they will go up.
I didn't realize that they made reproduction caps for this size truck but these must be repros if he keeps posting them.
I talked to the guy and the ones on Ebay are indeed repos. I know someone was making them a few years ago, but were discontinued. Maybe this guy is having them made again, or he's been sitting on some for a while.
The stock caps I have on my F-2 fit both the front and back. As far as I know the only difference between the F-2s and F-3s is that the F-3 don't have rear shocks and have larger wheels. Are you sure the rear end in your truck is the stock one? I'm pretty sure the rear ends in both trucks are the same. I just bought a '52 F-3 parts truck, I will compare the rear end with the one in my '49 F-2 to be sure. Maybe you have an optional rear end in your's that's larger than stock.
Not sure at all if they are stock. But the front and the rear are the same size. They both have 8 lug nuts and were both to big for the Hub caps that were sent to me. I do have shocks on the rear end and all info tells me that it is a 3/4 ton.
If you have the wrong caps that were sent to you still, measure the inner diameter of the locking ring. If it's around 8 inch, they're F-1 caps. Do you have the correct rims on the truck? Do they have the internal nubs for the caps to lock onto? The center of the rim should dish in a bit so that the area that the cap locks onto is only in from the face of the axle hub slightly. Take a straight edge and put it across the face of the axle hub and measure the distance to the point of the rim that sicks out the farthest. That should be where the hubcap mounts.
The F-2's and F-3's used the exact same rear end and hubcaps. On the F-3's the rear shocks were optional. I took some top shock mounts of a F-1 and they bolted right on. You will need to find the bottom mounts though. With the F-3 rear shocks won't do much since I was unable to actually make the springs move when I jumped up and down on the frame. By todays weight standards the F-3 is a 3/4, the F-2 a 1/2 and the F-1 between a 1/4 and 1/2. Our '78 F-250 can handle as much as my M-3.
