Fuel Problem

I have a 2000 F350, 7.3, My son broke down yesterday and when I went to tow him home I noticed fuel on ground under oil pan area. I checked the fuel filter on top for leaking lines but all are tight and see no leaks. Any thoughts please.

A fuel leak won't cause it to shut down unless it runs out of fuel. If it's a big leak that just started, the passenger side fuel line on top of the motor has been known to get a hole rubbed in it and cause a massive leak. The fuel bowl drain valve has some o-rings in it that are prone to leak when they get old if it's a small leak. A couple of dollars in o-rings and you're back up and running. You can order the parts to fix the fuel leak here 1999-2003 Ford 7.3L

I guess the more important question is, have you confirmed it's out of fuel and that is the problem? How did it die? Spit and sputter, or like someone shut the key off? Any faint smoke coming out the tailpipe while you crank it now? Any more information you can share?

Ok, my son said he was shifting from 1st to 2nd and it started shuttering. He shifted back into 1st and it stalled and died. Has plenty of fuel. I checked both fuses to fuel pump and they are good. With a test light I checked the power to the pump and it has fire and I can hear it pumping. It was raining yesterday so It might had been oils that had dripped and made it look like fuel. It has a small oil leak. I checked the oil and it looks normal. I sprayed a small shot of starter fluid and it tried to start. I just replaced the fuel/ water separator a couple of weeks ago due to it leaking. I pushed the switch over on separator and fuel filter is full and discharging diesel. Thanks for the feedback...

Skip the starting fluid from now on. Diesels have glow plugs that can ignite the fumes from starting fluid in more than one cylinder at a time. That can mean major engine damage if you're not lucky.

Sounds like it's not a fuel issue. Triple check the engine oil level since the fuel injectors run off of engine oil. How long did it sputter before it die? Any dash lights come on when it started to sputter? Any smoke coming out the tail pipe while cranking? All dash lights act normal when trying to start or when turning the key on? Any chips/tuners or modifications to the truck?

Gotcha on the spray. No lights are coming on at the dash area. I see no smoke coming from the pipe when turning over. Oil level is full. I was told that air might had gotten in the injectors. I'm going to soak a rag in gas tomorrow and see if I can try and start it. I'm running an extension out to motor tonight to plug in. I'm in the Houston, Tx area and not real cold but cold enough. Thanks for the help. I'll let you know what happens tomorrow.

Checked the fuses, all good. poured gas on rag placed in air intake and tried to start it. It wanted it to start just didn't. Any thoughts????

You may have gotten air in the fuel lines, but if the fuel bowl is filling up when the key is turned on, and if you have pressure there, then the air won't keep the truck from starting.

If you're not seeing any smoke at all out of the tailpipe, then the computer is not making the injectors fire. Does the tach bounce at all while cranking? The CPS has a history of causing no starts and stalling trucks. If you want to try that, be sure to get a CPS from Ford or International. Too many issues with the aftermarket ones. Is there a chip or tuner on the truck? Was it raining when this happened? Wait to start light come on and go off like normal when the key is first turned on?

Well I went and bought a CPS today at O'rileys before checking my email. I'm having to check truck out at night when I get off. Hopefully this will do the trick. I don't have a chip are tuner on the truck. I did not notice the tach bouncing neither. I'm going to try and replace this in the morning and see what happens. Thanks for the feed back...

Well that didn't work. I'm out of ideals!! My back yard mechanic skills are out the window and I'm officially pissed, lol I guess I have to spend the money and have it fixed. Thanks for all your feed back...

Well I'm afraid to give up. I disconnected the ICP hoping it would crank but still no luck. I keep thinking they will get my truck, spend about 15mins, find the problem, shack their head and charge me 200 bucks, thank you very much look on their face, lol any thoughts???

I forgot to add, I replaced the cps and tried to start it but nothing. The tach did move indicating the cps is working. I soaked a towel in fuel and placed it in the air intake by the air filter. The truck started in a very low power, I could see white smoke coming around from the tail pipe. The truck ran for about 5-6 seconds.

Injector control module or HPOP? I don't know how to check the ICM. There is a plug in the top of the HPOP. Take it out and bump the engine with the starter to see if oil pumps out.

Check the tin nut on the back side of the IPR to make sure it didn't come off. Check the wiring to the ICP and the IPR to make sure the insulation is not brittle or chaffed and shorting out.

Tin nut tight, all wiring locked in and secure. There are no brittle wires into any of the sensors I have checked. I'm sure I'm missing something simple but just can't figure it out. If the oil is full and I started it with a soaked fuel rag and I see white smoke coming from back does that mean it not getting fuel some how? I know the fuel pump is working because I tested it and it has fire. You can hear it pumping and stopping when the lines are full. I keep it plugged in just for the extra heat on the glow plugs and nothing.

White smoke means you are getting fuel. Having a scanner that can read live data would be helpful, but they are expensive. What part of the country are you in just in case there is a member with a scanner close by?

Do you have access to a hydraulic gauge and some fittings? You can remove the ICP sensor and screw a gauge in that hole to read your oil pressure on the high side while cranking to see if the problem is oil related (engine oil fires the injectors). You need to see a minimum of 500 psi to start.
