I just changed my oil and noticed a drip coming out of a hole in the dust cover on the tranny. I smelled it and I think its fuel, but how could that be? Any suggestions before I start trying to diagnose?
Check the engine valley with a nice strong light. If there is any fluid down there sop some up with a rag and determine if it is fuel or oil. Let us know.
Robin has ya going. After you get it cleaned up and it is fuel..I bet your leak is the fuel drain o-rings.
BINGO...that's the #1 culprit. It will be dripping from that yellow valve. You need two Viton o-rings, size #202. A small torx bit to remove to screws is all that's needed to remove the valve assembly...pop the flattened o-rings out, and shove the two new ones in.
I just changed the drain valve on my 01X. Started smelling diesel when stopped but never seen a drip. It kept getting worse to the point it smelled like an old bus when walking up to it. I climbed up into the engine bay and the valley was soaked in diesel. I went ahead and just changed the valve. Curiously, when I compared old and new on the bench, The old one had smaller black orings and the new one had larger OD green ones. I assumed the material change was for ULSD but the size made me take a second take. Anyway, it was pretty easy to change. I used a ratchet wrench and a T20 to take it off and put it back on. No leaks now. Simple greened the motor to clean up the diesel. The whole valve was $50 from the dealership. I will buy the orings and rebuild the old one for a spare.
I just got three fuel bowl rebuild kits from Bob myself. The bosses valve was leaking pretty bad, turned out the valve itself cracked in half.
I ordered the brown orings with my kits. I guess they aren't as affected by ULSD.
Now I just need to do mine and my buddies, we dont have any leaks yet, but might as well do a little preventative maintanence.
Thats for the blue orings. I just ordered my orings a few hours ago. I got the standard black ones. $5 shipped.
For the extra $2.50 or $1.31, depending on which ones you got, you should have gotten the blue Fluorosilicone o-rings. Will out last the other types by a long shot.
Temp range:-70º F to +437º F used in military aircarft fuel (JP-4, JP-5, JP-8), aerospace and lubrication applications.
I know. But the factory ones lasted 150k so I was ok with replacing them in another 150k. I prefer to keep as much stock as possible. Thats just me though.
