I'm still leaning twards an up pipe leak, where did the truck come from? I really wouldn't run that truck hard until you hook that pyro up. EGT's will climb quickly especially with the high Peformance tunes.
Not sure what the egt are i still have to hook that gauge up i ordered the thermo thing that you tap into the exhaust just waiting on it to arrive.. i have a new sunpro boost gauge that i installed. It kinda bounces around alot when the turbo is spooling
Thanks again for everyones help
Sunpro? Not sure about the bouncing around, mine is pretty smooth.
That varies a lot depending on load, etc.. Max for extended periods is 1200 or so, can peak at 1400-1600, but only for a few seconds, not minutes. Others might have more of a scientific answer, but most guys watch for the higher limits and don't worry a lot about cruising down the road. Unless it's 1200 with no load, then there is a problem.
That is with the probe in the exhaust manifold.

Reason: added info.
Ok i cleaned the boots and looked for cracks or splits. I put them back on and i gained about 3 lbs of boost.. looked for soot or anything on the firewall none of that getting my egt probe tomorrow and i will tell you what they are. Anything else it could be?
If you were getting 15 pounds before cleaning up everything and now you're getting another 3 pounds, I would say thats pretty normal for a stock truck.
Anywhere from 16-18 pounds I would say you're fine.
Sounds like your boots were the majority of your boost problem cause 18psi is up to par for a stock truck, but you might be able to push more considering you have a chip. Your EGT gauge will definitely tell you more of the story than your boost gauge.
What all did you put on it?? And how would i tell if the up pipes were bad? If they just aren't getting a good connection? Or would they be rusty? Or leaking?
Check his signature for mods, I'm right around 30 psi now.
Normally the pipes will start to leak at the top where they mate with the collector.
Before I changed mine you could see black soot streaks down the pipes below the collector.
Its pretty easy to see any soot if they are leaking with a good light and a mirror.
If you don't see any soot, or hear any leaks, you are probably fine. However if you do hear any leaks, but don't see any soot at the top of the pipes, check the bottom of them where they mate with the manifold and all your manifold bolts.
Soot is always a sign of a leak.
And when you get your pyro, it will be easy to tell if you have a large leak before even searching cause your egt's will be sky high.
So when you are installing your probe, just look around for any black.
Ok so i ordered new gauges installed them and my egt peaks at 1300 wot its about 500 at 55 i made a boost leak detector out of pvc and tire gauge and a valve stem. I found out that one of my intake boots was cracked going into the turbo which i coukdnt see that making a difference but i ordered one.. waiting for that to get here. The up pipes looked about new no rust or anything on them no soot coming from them.. hopefully when i get that boot it makes me get a few more psi.. any other things i should look for? Thanks
is the red line hooked up to the wastegate actuator on the backside of the turbo... up top... right by the firewall? if it is... try unplugging it from the wastegate actuator and plug the line onto one of the cac tube clamp bolts... this will tell you if your wastegate control selonoid is blowing off early... might yield you a few extra psi...
on my totally stock turbo... simply put in a fresh compressor housing oring and installed the spinner... i am getting up to 32psi boost pulling my 5er up a hill.
at your mileage... fresh injector orings wouldnt hurt.
made a world of difference after the 403k miles on Motorbug.
if your up pipes look new... i wonder...
where the pipes join up at the back of the collector... are the top sections of the pipes smooth? or do you see what looks like a bunch of rings stacked together... almost like corrugated pipe?
Ok im not 100% sure what you mean.. yes the red line is connected where would i put that at? And i will look at the up pipes when i get home and let you know
if you unplug the redline... it disables the wastegate actuator.
the redline will then need to be plugged onto one of the boot clamp bolts on the hot side of the spider. to give you a better idea how your system works...
air goes in the air filter.. thru the hard rubber tube into the compressor housing... then it gets pressurized and goes into the spider (next in line after turbo... its the thing in front of the turbo) then into the cac tube on the drivers side and runs down by the power steering pump and connects to the charged air cooler. then it goes into the tube on the passenger side... back into the spider... then to the intake plenums...
on the drivers side cac tube... up top, at the spider... you have 2 clamps.
plug the redline on the end of the bolt on one of these clamps.
they are impossible to miss.
if they arent there... thats probably part of the boost issues.
