Just got home with a 2000 Excursion Limited, 4:30 gears v10, 4wd, 150k miles. No pic yet as I got home after dark. The two hour drive home I went 13.6mpg.
So time to start the sorting out and fixing...
Luckily no problems with the door locks, hatch struts completely dead, there is something spliced into some wiring harnesses in the engine compartment maybe a security system, there is a "theft" light on the dash that blinks, so I don't know. But...
The horn and the cruise control controls on the steering wheel don't work. The CC switches do light up when you turn on the headlights. Any ideas?
Also looks like the trans temp runs about 120s and coolant 130-140, stuck thermostat maybe?
How did you measure these temps? Scangauge?
There's no thermostat for the transmission, and the cooler for the transmission is completely independent from the engine cooling circuit. 120s sound about right for this time of year, which is why I installed a Derale thermostat kit for mine. I now see 170-180° year-round which is advantageous for a few reasons.
It does sound like you need a new engine thermostat though. You should be between 180-190° once it's warmed up.
yeah scangauge, sorry I only meant to comment on thermostat for the engine coolant.
Since I have the v10 f350 it was just plug and go with the scangauge.
That's great to hear, I use a Scangauge as well. Possibly one of my most useful tools, and it's great for stuff like this! See THIS THREAD for the details on my transmission thermostat.
Those are the stock size? I found a thread talking about some longer ones to get the hatch up a bit higher, I'm 6'2" so that sounded interesting.
RockAuto is a site sponsor and is quite a bit cheaper. Folks with 4x4 Excursions buy lift support struts for a 2WD truck; they are longer because of the lower height of the 2WD models. I paid $24.53 shipped for a pair of Monroe lift supports.
my hatch struts are dead dead, may as well not even be there. So I may stop by and see what I can find local first. Thanks for the discount code I'm sure I'll find that handy.
Once it warms up a bit I'm going to see if I can figure out whats going on with the cruise and horn, thats got me the most concerned at the moment. And start picking away on fluid/filters.
I love the extended struts I put on...I am 6-2 and need to stretch to pull it down, and oncenunlatched goes up by its own....love it!!!!!!! I bought them on recommendation from a thread on here. Just search
got struts, the ones they listed at the parts store, they didn't list difference between 4x4 and 4x2 in the 2000, and when they did in newer ones they matched the ones that came off. *shrug* I was able to get groceries, not too big an investment to get another set if these bother me in the future.
I had a 30A fuse, one of the square with the clear top in the engine compartment blown, but my repair manual doesn't have a diagram of whats what in the fuse boxes so I'll need to track that down.
I have to say I was worried about this being like my F350, but I can actually maneuver in the grocery store parking lot with this thing. A nice surprise.
