Cold Air Intakes - This Sucks

Since I installed my 38R, my filter minder trips when I get on it. There are two possibilities:
  • I still have the "weaker" filter minder that I've heard about.
  • My modified Motorcraft AIS (Donaldson) isn't up to the task.
While scouring the net for CFM data on touted filter systems, this is what I've found so far (if it is all to be believed):
  • Stock CFM = 277
  • Napa 6637 CFM = 425
  • AFE Stage 2 CFM = 582
  • Motorcraft AIS CFM = 775
  • AirAid Stage 2 CFM (oiled) = 820
7.3L theoretical MAX CFM = 850 CFM

I'm looking for:
  1. Something that doesn't trip the Filter Minder.
  2. As quiet as I can get, understanding it doesn't get as good as the AIS.
  3. Cold intake.
  4. Good cleaning.
The 6637 is out of the question because it fails at everything on the list... compared to what I'm used to. I've heard them.

Please feel free to poke holes at the numbers I acquired if you know better. If you're beast is using the Filter Minder (whine-free) and and more ponies than I am, what are you using? If you think my Filter Minder is failing miserably, chime in.

The numbers are interesting. I need to put the filter minder on my 6637 set-up and see if I can pin it the way the AIS did... I know I don't suck oil out of the CCV the way I did with AIS!! Of course, Gene always told us the 6637 didn't flow enough air!

'Cold' air is over-rated. On the highway, I've seldom seen more than a few degrees higher temps on the backside of the 6637 than the ambient temp.

I'm gonna build a 'heat shield' like the AFE uses and see if that helps the 6637. The S366 is not any quieter than the 38R......

Thinking the 'enclosed' S&B may be the next try for me. I'd like to hear some reviews from those who have used this filter.

Sorry about the new Turbo. At least it is rebuildable right?

Rich, the numbers don't sound right do they? I can't imagine Ford put a 277cfm filter on a motor that can pull 850cfm. And another Ford filter for that engine that flows more than twice the original, considering it was intended for better filtering in dusty conditions and not more flow. You have the fender sleeve, no? If not rig that up and call it good. And ditch the filter minder. I put in the plug that came with my cai. If your like me,and I'm sure you are, you don't need it to tell you to check a filter. I don't think I would trust it anyway. Is that another way of saying were an@l.
Jim.

Do a search on here for the 6637 flow numbers...that rated CFM has a catch to it. I'll just say right now, those numbers are not accurate at all. AFE big boost flows 850+ CFM. Highest flowing filter out there as far as I know. 6637 flows a bit less, but has by far the best filtering aside from the AIS. Cold doesnt matter on a diesel because of the fact that the turbo is going to heat the air when it compresses it anyways, then it cools in the intercooler, so buying an intake because its going to keep the air "cooler" is just a gimmick when it comes to forced induction.

For me (and I'm running a turbo that flows a S**T Ton more air than the 38R) its an AFE Big Boost, with a 6637 that goes on when I'm cleaning and oiling the big boost, or when the air quality is horrible like it was this summer with the fires. Unfortunately I didnt throw it on during the fires this year, and yea...thats a whole nother story.

Basically an AFE stage 2, or an AFE Big Boost are your two best filtering highest flowing intakes on the market as far as I know, and as far as those I have talked to regarding this exact question say. Rich I dont believe you would have any problems with a 6637, there are definitely plenty of people running it with a 38r, or much larger turbo(s).

dumped my 6637 for an afe 2 and havent looked back....have the dry s filter for winter and the one you oil (proguard 7 i think) for summer......doesnt move the minder at all....the 6637 was such a restriction it would suck the minder all the way down.....i do run an h2e and not a 38r but very close in comparison.....

Bill -Are you talking about a clean 6637 or packed with dirt, being restrictive ?

Me too, dumped the 6637 and the AFE big boost (with the 38R), now using the AFE stage 2 pro 5 R i believe rated @1350 cfm, finally no more minder issue....

I beleive if you put the stock filter miner from the stock air filter on it will cure your problem. You can also put on the fender sleve if you want. You can also use the deeper WX filter on the stock air box, as long as the lid is okay, and be fine also. At least thats what my neighbor dose.

I have the AFE stage 2 xp (the xp has a different enclosure than the stage 2), with the blue pro 5r filter, please check the flow numbers on that setup, it will flow. It is this one

I would like to see where those CFM numbers came from for the stock filter. Was that the box's rating? I know the actual OEM filter is rated at a higher CFM than the 6637.

I have an AFE cone filter that I used a piece of 4 inch exhaust pipe to attach to the factory intake. A little roto-zip action to the stock air box lower and it breaths deep, and talks to me all the time, love that turbo sound. The filter minder on mine got tossed in the vertical file along with the rest of the factory air box lid that was broken. I have cleaned it 2 times in 35k miles and 2 years.

My X has the complete S&B intake on it. It seems to breath OK, but everything else on that vehicle is all stock, it is MUCH quieter then my open AFE filter on the 450. It is only slightly louder then factory, if anything at all, I am going to do the zoodad mod on the X to see if it helps at all.

I have the Banks CAI and it hasn't sucked closed yet. I am pulling about 26 lbs of boost. It is loud though.

The filter minder that comes with the AIS is over sensitive. I put my factory original filterminder in the AIS and it doesn't pull in, with my AIS with fender sleeve and 38R. I don't have my sticks yet so it may pull in like yours does. I came from the 6637 to AIS because of noise. Tugly I don't think you will like the noise of a 6637. Mabe pull the tube that goes to the grill area and see if there is less restriction?? Just a thought.
