Hello, I have a 98 4door 4x4 auto.Reverse stopped working a year ago. The forward speeds work perfectly. I hate to have to rebuild the entire trans. I've been driving it some, being careful where I park, but getting tired of it. My question is do you have to pull and take the trans all the way apart to fix this?
It may not- If the problem is the reverse servo, that can be accessed just by dropping the pan. I have seen some references to a reinforcement plate for the servo cover, and a tendency to blow out the servo cover gasket. It's much more likely to be a hydraulic issue than a band problem.
Drop the trans pan & the rev servo is right there (4 bolts on the cover), pull it out & have a look, if it looks fine then the trans will have to come out.......
Thanks Gigger and Ford-six.It would be great if for once I could have a simple fix.. I just hate spending $1200 to $1500 on a $3500 vehicle.Yes,it goes into park just fine.
I am going to check it out hopefully this week. It probably is the clutches, but it didn't gradually get worse. I just put it in reverse one morning and it just wasn't there . Before that it worked fine. All other gears....perfect.
