Where to start on 4x4 problem

Its not my truck, its a buddies. I think its a 2000, he keeps his hubs locked in all the time. The other day he turned the **** to 4x4 but it wouldn't kick in, tried a few more times and it finally kicked in. Then after he didn't need it, it wouldn't come out of 4x4, after a few times switching back and forth from 2 to 4x4 it finally came out. Now it won't go back in. Where should we start looking for problems?
Thanks!

Check to see if the shift motor on the transfer case is getting power. Sounds like the motor just needs some cleaning/use to keep it going. My '00 had issues of not always engaging but the more I play with it, the better it works.

Owners should work 4 wheel drive about once a month to avoid these issues.

Let your friend know that locking the hubs full-time keeps the front drive shaft spinning all the time and it robs him of power and MPG... as well as introduce undo wear.

Shift motor... yup.

X2 on that, I recently (few days ago) discovered an "always-on" hub. Just one, mind you, but correcting the problem boosted me almost 2 mpg overnight.

There are others much more knowledgeable on oils, too, but I know the front and rear diffs take different viscosity oils and the front diff was not designed to run full time. As a precaution, I'll be changing the front diff oil now that I know it was spinning constantly for a couple of years. Something to pass along to your buddy once he gets the 4x4 sorted out.

As for the sluggish response, would also check for power at the shift motor like these guys are suggesting. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I just got off the phone with him, the shift motor is not the problem.

So the shift motor is engaging and disengaging as it should? If that is true, then look into cleaning and rebuilding both front hubs.

The way I understood him is, there isn't power getting to the shift motor.

Fuse, relay, switch, and wiring in between then would be the next steps, in that order, to get the power to the shift motor.

Due to the intermittent nature of the problem as you described it, I'd suspect a sticking relay in the underhood block. Try swapping it with an identical relay that performs a different (noncritical) function.

Is that verified with a meter or just that that the motor is not working? Can make a difference in what is next.

He bought a new motor, put it on and it didn't work.

throwing parts at it is expensive, trouble shooting would be the best approach.

He wanted a spare shift motor laying around anyways, so he isn't worried about that. I will tell him to try the relay and fuse, if thats not it, I'll pull my switch out, and put it in his truck to see if thats the problem. I'll let you know what he finds out.
Thanks again
