Pulled the trigger on new Banks headers coming from AutoAnything for $942.30 shipped. Included free shipping and 15% "New Customer" discount. Should make my F250 V10 happy, presently have 3 broken studs and I want to fix it once and for all.
Well the headers came in last Friday and were installed yesterday. Must say the kit is well designed and everything went as planned according to directions. Including 8 broken studs, took about 8.5 hours at my friendly Van Loo's Automotive Shop that has done all my work for years. The exhaust seems a little "throatier" and midrange power is stronger by a good deal. Going on a 600 mile trip in a week so will have a chance to check mileage. They sure seem like a nice looking fit. Now for a call to 5 Star!
Do you mind me asking what it cost to have them installed? I just had a new Magnaflow muffler put on my truck and asked the shop how much to replace my exhaust studs and was told around $400-500. He said he has replaced a lot of them on Fords. I was thinking of getting headers when I get ready to do them.
Including the broken studs repair, which wasn't bad as none had to be drilled out, cost to install the headers was $814. They told me that the install on the headers was only an additional 2-3 hours over R&R of the stock manifolds. I stopped by periodically to check on the progress and it seemed to have gone well. The mechanic did say having the truck on a lift helps a lot when installing the Banks kit. This was the second set he had done in recent months on V10 powered trucks.
When I had the 9 broken studs on my Excursion repaired 1 year ago, it cost me $1200 for this repair due to some of the studs having to be drilled out, new gaskets, studs and a bad oxygen sensor. I figured if I'm going to spend the money to repair the broken studs I'm at least going to get headers and solve it once and for all. Wish I had known this when I had the X repaired.
Repair costs can vary a lot, all depends where you are located and whether the shop is paying their employees a "working wage with benifits". I try to support shops that have been around for years and pay their employees reasonably well.
I once had a new engine installed by the "low bidder", lasted 1900 miles out of a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. Again had it done by a very good shop that had a great reputation and charged me 15% more then the first shop. That engine now has about 165k miles and still going strong. Lessoned learn for me.
I bought a truck camper that weighs about 2000# and hauled it home yesterday. Trip home was 326 miles loaded and over Stevens Pass, hubs in for about 100 miles (snow packed roads), cruised at 55-60 for most the trip and 11.88 mpg, pulled every hill in 5th gear and was in 6th (OD) much of the trip. Was surprised at how well it carried the load and performed. Gotta love that 6 speed, V10 and Banks headers. Going over the pass empty and cruising about the same got 14.79 mpg.

Sparky, I can't tell you how happy I was to read that! I too picked up a set from Autoanything for Christmas, they are sitting in the garage waiting to be put on. I pull a heavy ToyHauler with my EX and this is exactly what I am hoping to get from the Banks headers, a decent improvement in midrange power/torque. The new gears helped a lot but of course I want more..........
Thanks for the info!
At 60 I'm turning about 2000 RPM in 6th. Holds very well on most grades and 5th pulls everyhill I came across. You'll love the sound, kind of reminds me of my old 65 GTO "goat". Best addition I've done to the truck.
