On my 2008 F250 6.4 deisel whenever I put the heater on recirculate it only stays there for 5 minutes or so and then switches to fresh air. Is this normal and if so is there anyway to keep it on recirculate?

Not normal. Try unplugging your batteries for 10-15 minutes. It sounds like a firmware glitch.
This is interesting and has been a small annoyance on my '11 that I forget to bring up to the dealer.
My recirc stays on, for what I feel, long enough to bring the cab up to what it thinks the set temp is, then switches over to fresh automatically.
For example, fire up the truck in the morning, finally get some warm air so I throw it on high with the recirc pressed. It stays on for a while (really, the time it stays on depends on the outside temp and how cold it is in the cab) then switches back to fresh. I press the recirc again and it stays on for a while, then switches back to fresh. It's somewhat of an annoyance but it's not difficult to press a button, but I wonder if that's how it's supposed to work. I have dual climate control but currently have it set to single only.
i think that is normal if you have it set on defrost/floor or floor. (possibly even on panel)
i know my f150 at work does the same thing. I'll have to check next time i drive it and see what it does.
if you leave it on recirculate too long your windows will begin to fog on the inside. i used to do this on my work beater on REALLY cold days because the engine didn't make enough heat to stay warm otherwise, had to manually put the slider inbetween to keep enough fresh air coming in that it didnt fog up.
meborder nailed it, thanks friend! The heater stays on recirculate if you put the "mode" control on the left side for the panel vents but it you put it on the right side for the defrost/floor or defrost it only stays on recirculate for something like 5 minutes. Dang this is really a great forum and I'm posting back because of the recent post about folks following up and letting everybody know the outcome to the suggestions to our questions.
I tried this yesterday and Mike's answer seems to be the case for mine as well. Anything having to do with the defrost would kick off the recirc after a certain amount of time.
