Ive got a 64 f250 4x4 with a 7.3 swap. I got into the dash wiring and its a bit of a mess, melted wires, speaker wire. Butchery. Has any one had any luck with aftermarket harness's or an oem replacement. I am trying to keep the budget down to.
WIth respect to the dash harness I have yet to come across anyone who reproduces them. Removed the dash harness on the 65 and used plastic ties to keep each truck separate and then commence to replace, and/or repair wires, circuits, 1 at a time, as needed. Found best to used wire wrapping tape works best, especially if decide to add circuit in the future, it's non addhesive, I use standard electricians tape to secure the end.
Replaced the engine, alternator, taillight and headlight harness on the 65 with reproduction, every good quality with the same wire color codes and connectors so it was a matter of unplugging the old and plug in the new. Found adding a dab of dielectric grease to the connectors helps slow down corrosion.
Not familar with aftermarket, if intend replacing the dash harness then the kit may be the better option, especially if intend adding additional circuits; although, I added a couple addition circuits when I reconditioned the harness on the 65. Understand the kits are not that complicated so perhaps a memerber who has installed the kit will chime in. ?
American Autowire sells a complete harness and I'm pretty sure they sell the dash harness separate also. The complete set is very pricey, so I'm not ready to take the plunge yet. I really like things to look neat and correct, so I may end up spending the $$ eventually. 1961-66 Ford Truck Wiring Harness
