53-56 Running boards

Just wondering if anyone has built their own running boards. I have a pair of Fairlane fiberglass boards, but they are a bit too traditional looking for the style of my truck.

I would like to build a board with some type of styling feature in the sides for the exhaust tips. I saw a 55 some years ago that had a really nice set of fabricated boards that had the exhaust running out the side through the boards. Thought I had a picture, but I can't seem to find it. I don't remember the features well enough to duplicate them.

So if you've made your own, how about some details on how you fabricated them. Pictures would be nice too.

Thanks...Andrew

i`m doing the same thing, i want to raise the running boards a bit (roughly an inch or so) i`ll add the inch where the exhaust tip comes out on the side of the running board, found a bunch of tips on e-bay for camaro`s, for the back of them, i thought of cutting them out and just welding plate horizontly along the back of the board, mabe add an inch of material that would protrude under the board to add more rigity and of course a bit higher so i eliminate the rubber skirting under the cab, sorry i can`t help you with pictures!! its basically all in my head, as soon as if ix my front sheetmetal allignment problem i will be starting on them.

Are you going to try to maintain the style of the stock boards as far as radius on the inside and outside corners? I'm not sure if I'm explaining myself on this. I may need to grab the camera and go to the garage for a quick picture. Thanks for the response!!!

i`m going to eliminate the radius from the board to the back raised part that fits under the cab (kind of hard to explain) atleast thats the plan, might look too odd without the radius??

This is a good example of what I'm looking for. I want to make the part of the running board where the exhaust comes through wider(thicker) and maybe some character lines built in around the opening. Do you have any other views of this truck? He has really added a lot of details to those boards. Any idea what he has going on under the stake pocket at the back of the cab?

By the way pitshop, I wandered over to your gallery, great job on documenting your build. Always good to see that someone is willing to try something different.

Look at Keith and Tim's gallery pics. They have done some modification to their boards.

Andrew, theres one more picture of this truck under crown vic wiring in my gallery, i couldn`t post it, right where the exhaust comes out i want to add an inch or so exactly what i think you want to do? figured i`d raise the board one inch like you would do if you want to eliminate the rubber strip under the cab?? i`ve kind of got it all pictured in my head but you know how it is, ideas might change when i build it! as for the pocket in back of the cab, i can`t figure that one either. thanks for the compliments on my truck, i`ve also been watching your build, your truck looks really sweet!

I've spent the last hour looking through these galleries. They both have done some great work!! Is there a way of finding these galleries, especially the ones, that are doing custom work like Tim and Keith? I'm still new to this forum and still learning my way around.

Thanks for the links

Andrew- I don't know of any good way to search for custom work on member trucks. I just remembered Keith and Tim's work and forgot about Randy's work on his boards. Since I'm an old dog I'm lucky to remember 2 out of 3. You might just try a search on "boards" and see what comes up.

I spent quite a bit of time looking at Randy Jack's gallery. He really did a great job describing each step in building his running boards. I think they came out great!

Thanks for the information...
