I agree, I wouldnt do it. Let him drive his POS chevy, keep telling him you are still thinking about it, and then when he is broke down, burnt up tranny, spaghetti strap rear end hand grenade, or can't get his 4x4 to lock in because it is less than 20* out and the pathetic solenoid actuator can't shove hard enough to push the oil out of the way or he can't keep it between the mayonaise and mustard because his wishbone front end has some worn out bushings, tell him you will pull him then, any where he wants to go..... for half the price of a tow truck.
Or wait for his fuel pump to go out and then he can be drug all the way to the chebby store and give him a handfull of quarters to buy snacks and drinks from the vending machines while he waits for days and hours for enough chebbys to get fixed that he can have his turn.
I have a friend that is a ford guy that married a lady and they have kids, the wife put an abrupt halt to the fords. Her exact words, "well the GM products have a higher crash test rating" I said that they could hit my 78 f250 anywhere they wanted and we would see who was safer. He drives a 96 chevy 1500 that he doesn't like and she drives an envoy, The envoy has had a new transmission at $2800 a new water pump @ $200 needs a new $125 engine fan, And some strange electrical issues. Her last envoy she wrecked and it also had a new transmission, both well under 200,000 miles.
The chevy 1500 has, you guessed it, a new transmission, I rebuilt the rear end, and this was the 2nd rebuild, someone else fixed it once already, I rebuilt the AC for him, And he is always stuck because the stupid 4x4 won't kick in when cold because the solenoids suck. New fuel pump also, pwr windows barely work, new blower motor, I am done, I told him to quit calling me and buy a ford, any ford, a $100 rust bucket, he wants to, his wife says "crash test rating" The CTR is so high because they are always broken and don't ever drive anywhere on their own power no one ever gets hurt in one of those.
Pull if you must, but be aware that you will be starting a carpool till your friend gets his rear end fixed. I know he will break it if it isn't already broken, and you will feel guilty and give him a ride everywhere.
Warhorse, the CTR on those trucks is a joke. My little brother was a volunteer firefighter. After two Chebby vs Ford accidents he abruptly switched back to Fords from the chebby. He said the Chevy's were totalled and the occupants on the way to the hospital, the Fords were driven home and their occupants suffered some bruising. My wife won't buy a vehicle that doesn't get 30+mpg so I really pissed her off when I traded our '01 prizm with a bad engine for a '96 F150.

Yeah? ...and how many first gen E4ODs failed? Those Ranger/Bronco II/Explorer A4LD transmissions were pretty much made out of glass as well. Countless ESOF Ford transfercases have had control module, motor, and encoder failures. The BW1356 was known for destroying the oil pump and having the whole case seize up. The infamous automatic and vacuum locking hubs that just love to stop working right when you need them as well...
Look at how many tires have been killed by Ford's TIB/TTB suspension. Speaking of suspension, I wonder how many rust belt OBS trucks still have their original spring hangers and coil buckets?
Power window problems? I've guess you've never driven a Crown Victoria. Blower motors? Countless numbers of Fords have burnt their blower resistor packs and associated wiring to pieces.
Don't even have to mention the 90s-2000s Ford vehicles that had the nasty habit of burning to the ground just sitting there parked. I'm not saying GM products are better then Ford's, but Ford is guilty of just as much shoddy engineering as GM.
my sister has a 96 chevy 1500 4x4 with 140,000 on its second tranny third front end and second rear end.... boss has a 98 with 400,000 on a 5.4 only repair has been tires and bearings/u joints and a radio gotta love a ford
Well, I would like one thing answered: Why is it that ford is the only chassy that is rated for ambulence chassy? If you ride in an Ambulence, at least in my area, you will be riding in a ford. I had a coworker harp on a f250 a little bit last week, His wife just had a baby, I asked him what kind of ambulence got her and the youngster to the hospital, no more talk of fords.
For just pulling in general the best way to gain torque is gears. Add you a set of 4.10 gears with a LSD carrier, or locker. and you can pretty much pull anything.
BTW for future reference gears are about $200. So you can upgrade to something like a 3.73 or a 4.10 if you wish later. Thats not labor, just parts.
If you really want to prove who can pull better, don't ruin the truck in a tug-of-war. Find yourself a good long hill, a flatbed trailer, and load it up heavy and pull it up the hill. It's a much better comparison of what the trucks were actually made for.
Ford SDs and CVs are the norm here too, ambulance, fire(support vehicles),
and police CVs.
There is at least one Fusion police cruiser in downtown, I am curious to
see what will replace the CVs around here. I hope it is not the
Toyota Camry (there is at least one of these with police markings).
A little off topic, but Dodge Chargers are popular around here (Iowa). If I'm not mistaken, Chevy has the Caprice PPV, and Ford has the Taurus based Police Interceptor.

Not really off topic, it started as a FORD vs. Chebby thread.

As mentioned, both General Motors and Chrysler have ambulance ready platforms. I see a lot of Chevrolet based ambulances around here. Most of RIPTA (Rhode Island Public Transportation) shuttle buses are switching to Chevrolet as well.
