Before sending the 302 block away to get set up for a .030 over bore and building it. what would be a good set of heads for the build. the truck is an 84 long box 2wd, is intended for toying around town and playing on the highway. truck will never be towing anything or used as a truck at all. so my transmission is a c6 with a shift kit and high stall. my rearend is a 9 inch ls with 4.10s. how would you build the 306 for it? and whats the scoop on these cylinder heads? How would u build a nice streetable 302? Are the x306 heads good?
Sounds like the conditions for a 302 are almost right, except for the weight of the truck. It obviously won't get up to speed like a Mustang, but it would still run if built properly.
Since you've got a stall converter and 4.10's with a C6 (and provided your bottom end is compatible with a 302 that'll probably see a max of around 6000 to 6500 RPM), I recommend an Edelbrock Performer RPM set of heads and intake, a Holley 600 CFM carburetor, a set of long tube headers, and a cam of your choosing that would work up to around 6500 or so RPM.
I am pretty sure its like 2000-2500 it was built when i bought the truck. I should be alright with a 306. Its not a quarter mile truck just a toy to mess with my buddies wjth little cars. I am gonna be trying to strip a little bit of weight. But not carried away! Are the x306 heads good or are they no better than the gt40's? What compression ratio should i build for ? Running premium gas isnt an issue as i would only be driving it during the summer and not every day
Those are actually serious race heads. They were made to fit in some obscure rules for circle track.
If it were me, and I have similar goals, I would get some GT40P's and a H.O. cam from someone with a Mustang.
My ideal combo for a truck, somewhat heavy, is to compromise some HP for a little more torque but on a reasonable budget. You will have to work with your machine shop for the short block build because the GT40P's have a smaller combustion chamber, I would shoot for something between 9.5 and 10/1. Then have him degree the cam on a 110* intake centerline and that will give you an rpm range above 5500 with a redline just over 6000. If you can also try and use lightweight pistons it will be an added plus.
My choice-
Edelbrock RPM Heads
RPM Cam
Holley 650 Double pumper
10-1 compression
The 4.10 gear will keep the rpm's where the combo is going to work best. There's no need to degree the cam unless you can fix it if it's not what the cam card says. For max power your cam, carb and stall need to be matched. Be sure and do something to the exhaust. I could go wilder but don't think you could handle it!
