I took my truck in to my dealer service because I noticed a considerable amount of corrosion on the driver's side battery. I insisted that I needed new batteries. What if a small leak ruptures and acid spills all over my engine? They insisted that what I was seeing was normal and no need to worry. They did however order me some kind of bracket (under warranty) to support the battery. Not sure what it is or what it's supposed to do but they are installing it tomorrow. 5 minute job.

So I asked about the quality of our batteries. I was told that the stock batteries were very high quality and there is no need for Optima or Diehard or whatever expensive batteries I may find. Is this guy blowing smoke or is he being straight with me?

All I can say is: With over 50 years of driving under my hood and a LOT of new cars I have NEVER found OEM batteries to be much good beyond about 36 mo and I have seen them fail completely in less than 12 mo.

I used Optima's for years then they started failing on me and I found out why...they got bought out and quality when down hill. So bad in fact that Sears used to carry and Optima made their batteries but the failure rate was so high they dropped them and went with Odyssey. Odyssey builds many of theirs to mil spec stds and they are quite good.

One of the biggest problems with batteries used in off road is shock and vibration and this is an area where Odyssey shines and Optima does not...ask me how I know.

Ok I'll bite how do you know?

I guess if you have a warranty use it. I don't know who to believe when it comes to batteries.

Oaks,

Welcome aboard.

Was that your Jeep on it's side? Bummer.

Wife and I go to Moab annually to four wheel and camp out in the boonies for a week. It's a lot of fun.

I've only got 49 years of driving under my hood.

My Dad has 50 + years of experience too but I won't even get in the car with him anymore. He is like Mr. Magoo on steroids. He was a mechanic and millwright for all his career and even though the technology has changed leaps and bounds I trust his advise when it comes to cars and mechanics. And if he doesn't know, I just do my research until I do know.

The batteries I bought for my previous truck, which were on the high end, had great cold cranking amps and what a difference to start er up on when the temp gets lunar in the shade. OEM is usually overpriced and under performing compared to good aftermarket.

march and lund, I know of only one way to get exper and that is to just live it, there is no substitute, no school other than the school of hard knocks that you can go to.

I can look back and tell you the year of learning the most, albeit I did not know it at the time, was 1967 as a combat soldier in Vietnam, just a kid laying in a rice paddy in some stinkin jungle in a country far away. The lessons I learned there affected my career more than anything else.

When you do research, all you are doing is looking at other peoples experience...

Yea I love Moab, got about 12 trips or better up there, great place and if you have not done it a winter trip is in order, lots of fun snow wheelin
